ViolHelp: results of a pilot study to identify potential warning signs and risk factors for self- and hetero-directed violence in the calls received by the Helplines of the Italian National Institute of Health.

Background: Self- and hetero-directed violence (SHDV) is a serious public health problem and a complex phenomenon, influenced by individual and environmental factors. SHDV may occur particularly in moments of personal, economic and/or social crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the ISS-Helplines operators have perceived an increase in psychological distress and self-isolation among callers.

Trends and patterns in homicides in Italy: A 34-year descriptive study.

Aims: We aimed at analyzing homicide trends and patterns in Italy over the period 1980-2014.

Methods: We collected data from the Italian Mortality Database (Italian National Institute of Statistics), for the study period. Temporal trends were analyzed using joinpoint regression analysis, with estimated annual percentage change computed for each detected trend.

An easy, fast, effective tool to monitor the incidence of type 1 diabetes among children aged 0-4 years in Italy: the Italian Hospital Discharge Registry (IHDR).

National data of type 1 diabetes incidence are currently missing in Italy. To fill this gap, we estimated the national rate of first hospitalizations for type 1 diabetes among children aged 0-4 years and resident in Italy, as well as rates for each of the twenty-one Italian regions. We extracted the first episode of hospitalization in years 2005-2010 from the Italian Hospital Discharge Registry (IHDR).

Mortality associated with neurofibromatosis type 1: a study based on Italian death certificates (1995-2006).

Background: Persons affected by neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) have a decreased survival, yet information on NF1-associated mortality is limited. METHODS/AIM: The National Mortality Database and individual Multiple-Causes-of-Death records were used to estimate NF1-associated mortality in Italy in the period 1995-2006, to compare the distribution of age at death (as a proxy of survival) to that of the general population and to evaluate the relation between NF1 and other medical conditions by determining whether the distribution of underlying causes of NF1-associated deaths differs from that of general population.

Hospitalization for anorexia nervosa in Italy.

Objective: This study provides: a) rates of hospitalization for anorexia nervosa (AN) in Italy in 2004-2005 period; b) an estimate of the incidence of moderate to severe hospitalized AN in the same period among persons aged 10-19 years.

Method: 9863 hospital discharges of patients aged 10-59 years with a diagnosis of AN (ICD9CM code 307.1) were extrapolated from the Italian Hospital Discharges Database.
