Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to estimate the incidence of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) associated vasculitis (AAV) in a specific population of Cantabria, Northern Spain, using standardized classification criteria from ACR/EULAR 2022.
  • Over a 20-year period, 152 patients were diagnosed, with annual incidence rates showing an increase, particularly in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), and differences noted between sexes.
  • The findings indicated that while the incidence of AAV in Northern Spain is higher than in Southern Spain, it remains lower than in Northern European countries, and there has been a noticeable increase in

Donor exchange programs were designed to allocate organs for highly sensitized (HS) patients. The allocation algorithm differs slightly among countries and includes different strategies to improve access to transplants in HS patients. However, many HS patients with a calculated panel reactive of antibodies (cPRA) of 100 % remain on the waiting list for a long time.

Kidney transplantation is the preferred therapeutic option for end-stage renal disease; however, the alloimmune response is still the leading cause of renal allograft failure. To better identify immunologic disparities in order to evaluate HLA compatibility between the donor and the recipient, the concept of eplet load has arisen. Regular kidney function monitoring is essential for the accurate and timely diagnosis of allograft rejection and the appropriate treatment.

ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) comprises a group of necrotizing vasculitis that mainly affects small- and medium-sized vessels. Serum anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA), mainly anti-myeloperoxidase (anti-MPO) and anti-proteinase 3 (anti-PR3), levels may correlate to severity, prognosis, and recurrence of the disease. A retrospective analysis of 101 patients with MPO-positive and 54 PR3-positive vasculitis was performed, using laboratory established cut-off value, measured by chemiluminescence.

Background: CD64 expression on neutrophils surface (CD64N) by flow cytometry has been validated as a rapid biomarker for bacterial infections in both peripheral blood and other biological fluids. Ascites is a common complication in cirrhotic patients that a variety of factors can cause, including bacterial infections. Manual counting of polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells in ascitic fluid and microbiologic culture are essential for its diagnosis.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease whose pathogenesis is not fully understood at present. The role of proinflammatory cytokines, several adipokines, retinol-binding protein 4, angiopoietin-2 and other molecules has been previously reported. Angiopoietin-like 2 protein (ANGPTL2) is a glycoprotein belonging to the angiopoietin-like family that may play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of several chronic inflammatory diseases.

Background: The assessment of class II eplet mismatch load is useful to determine the risk of chronic rejection in solid organ transplantation. However, high-resolution (2-field) HLA typing is mandatory to accurately define eplet mismatches. The imputation of the most frequent allele has been used in retrospective studies.

Background: The role of non-HLA antibody is gaining special attention in solid-organ transplantation and in highly sensitized (HS) patients because of its potential involvement in graft loss (GL) and/or antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR). The identification of non-HLA antibodies while listed may provide deeper information about the increased immunologic risk prior to transplant. We aimed to identify non-HLA antibodies pretransplant that could involve GL in HS patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to understand the characteristics of patients with anti-HMGCR immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) in northern Spain, focusing on demographic, genetic, clinical, and serological features.
  • Eight patients were identified, predominantly over 50 years old and with a history of statin use, presenting severe muscle weakness and elevated serum CK levels; 7 out of 8 patients carried a specific HLA gene allele.
  • The findings suggest that low vitamin D levels and hypothyroidism may be risk factors for developing anti-HMGCR IMNM, highlighting a potential link to genetic predispositions in this region.

Vaccine efficacy is based on clinical data. Currently, the assessment of immune response after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination is scarce. A total of 52 healthcare workers were immunized with the same lot of BNT162b2 vaccine.

Several parameters aid in deciphering between viral and bacterial infections; however, new tools should be investigated in order to reduce the time to results and proceed with an early target-therapy. Validation of a biomarker study, including CD64 and CD169 expression, was conducted. Patients with active SARS-CoV-2 infection (ACov-2), bacterial infection (ABI), healthy controls, and antiretroviral-controlled chronic HIV infection were assessed.
