Purpose: There is increasing evidence that photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is both an effective and safe approach in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for both prevention and management of oral mucositis (OM), but its use in clinical practice is still limited and the timing of application is under discussion. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate possible differences between patients treated either with preventive or curative PBM therapy.

Methods: The retrospective case series included 24 patients suffering from multiple myeloma who underwent the same conditioning and transplantation protocol.

The addition of venetoclax to hypomethylating agents (HMA-V) improved the outcome of patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) ineligible for intensive treatment. The aim of our study was to confirm data reported in literature, in a real-life multicenter experience. We retrospectively evaluated 56 naïve AML patients who received HMA-V at 8 different collaborating Hematology Units in the North-East of Italy, from September 2018 to October 2020.

Gastrointestinal complications (GICs) represent the major cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Differential diagnosis of GICs is of paramount importance since early and reliable identification of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is essential for a correct management of the patients. The aim of the present retrospective study was to evaluate the occurrence of GICs after allo-HSCT and to assess the diagnostic performance of a quick endoscopic and histological assessment in the differential diagnosis between GVHD and other GI conditions.

Karyotypic analysis at time of diagnosis has an important value in determining initial response to treatment, remission duration and overall survival (OS) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Less is known about its value before allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) in patients transplanted with active disease, either relapsed or primary refractory (Rel-Ref) AML. We explored the impact of cytogenetic risk (stratification according to MRC-UK) in 2089 patients with either Ref (n = 972) or Rel AML (n = 1117) transplanted during the period 2000-2017.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the most powerful therapy preventing relapse in patients with adverse cytogenetics acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in first complete remission (CR1). In the absence of a matched related donor, potential alternatives include 10/10, 9/10 HLA-matched unrelated (UD) or haploidentical (Haplo) donors. We analyzed clinical outcomes of patients undergoing T-cell repleted Haplo (n = 74), 10/10 UD (n = 433) and 9/10 UD HSCT (n = 123) from 2007 to 2015, reported to the EBMT Registry.

Predicting mobilization failure before it starts may enable patient-tailored strategies. Although consensus criteria for predicted PM (pPM) are available, their predictive performance has never been measured on real data. We retrospectively collected and analyzed 1318 mobilization procedures performed for MM and lymphoma patients in the plerixafor era.

Article Synopsis
  • - The pathogenesis of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) involves immune cells like T lymphocytes and B cells, and there's no established treatment for severe cases which has led to interest in tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) for their antifibrotic effects.
  • - Researchers analyzed the effects of TKIs (nilotinib, imatinib, dasatinib, ponatinib) on immune cells both in lab settings and in patients with steroid-resistant cGVHD, focusing on how these drugs impact cell type frequencies and inflammatory cytokine production.
  • - The study found that while most T lymphocyte populations remained stable with TKI treatment, there was a significant drop in pro-inflammatory cytokines and
