Article Synopsis
  • Stage III NSCLC accounts for about one-third of lung cancer cases, but detailed data on its distribution and treatment in Brazil is lacking.
  • A study, RELANCE/LACOG 0118, analyzed 403 patients with stage III NSCLC across 13 cancer centers, focusing on their demographics, treatment, and survival outcomes from 2015 to 2021.
  • Results show that patients with public health insurance face later diagnoses and worse overall survival, indicating a need for improved health policies to ensure timely diagnosis and access to treatment in Brazil.*

Article Synopsis
  • The ICAR trial investigated the safety and effectiveness of chemotherapy (IC) followed by chemoradiation (CRT) with or without aspirin (ASA) in patients with high-risk locally advanced rectal cancer.
  • Results showed that while the treatment was generally safe and well-tolerated, adding ASA did not improve MRI tumor response, leading to the trial's closure.
  • Key outcomes included a 30.4% clinical complete response rate after treatment and promising 2-year disease-free survival (DFS) and 3-year overall survival (OS) rates, at 83.1% and 81.5%, respectively.

Purpose: Middle-income countries like Brazil often have a dichotomous health care system in which patients may be treated in either public or private institutions that differ substantially in terms of level of access to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Patients And Methods: This was a prospective, observational study to assess real-world data in 1,230 female patients with breast cancer who were treated in a private health care institution between 2012 and 2016 in Brazil.

Results: Breast cancer in these patients mostly was diagnosed at early (79.

Dyspnea is a common symptom in patients admitted to the Emergency Department (ED), and discriminating between cardiogenic and non-cardiogenic dyspnea is often a clinical dilemma. The initial diagnostic work-up may be inaccurate in defining the etiology and the underlying pathophysiology. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and reproducibility of pleural and lung ultrasound (PLUS), performed by emergency physicians at the time of a patient's initial evaluation in the ED, in identifying cardiac causes of acute dyspnea.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Monica Padoan"

  • - Monica Padoan's research primarily focuses on health disparities and treatment outcomes across various cancers in Brazil, emphasizing the need for improved access to healthcare services and reliable data on treatment efficacy.
  • - Her recent studies include an observational analysis of stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), revealing significant inequalities in health services access that correlated with poorer patient outcomes, as well as a trial addressing induction chemotherapy for high-risk rectal cancer.
  • - Padoan also investigates the real-world treatment outcomes of breast cancer patients in private healthcare settings, highlighting early diagnosis rates, and the diagnostic utility of ultrasound in differentiating causes of dyspnea in emergency situations.
