Hospital to Hospital Transfers of Cerebral Hemorrhage: Characteristics of Early Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Treatment.

Background: Large intracerebral hemorrhages (ICHs) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Patient transfer to higher level centers is common, but care in these centers rarely demonstrably improves morbidity or reduces mortality. Patients may rapidly progress to brain death, but a large number die shortly after transferring because of withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment (WOLST).

Toxin-Induced Coma and Central Nervous System Depression.

Many medications and toxins may induce central nervous system (CNS) depression. Even when the intention is to induce CNS depression, other nervous system adverse effects may occur, such as with anesthetics. Pain medications produce characteristic CNS toxicities.

Acute truncal ataxia in a healthy adult with varicella zoster virus cerebellitis: A case report and literature review.

Acute cerebellitis is a well recognized complication of varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection in children. It has been described in adults in the setting of virus reactivation with a preceding herpes zoster rash, but it is exceedingly rare in adults who are not elderly or immunocompromised, particularly in the absence of a rash. To our knowledge, there has been only one reported case of acute cerebellitis in an immunocompetent adult less than age 65 with virological confirmation of acute VZV infection.
