The mining industry suppresses vegetation, exposing large soil areas in its ordinary operation. Water pollution and turbidity are caused by the carrying of solids, mainly colloidal particles, to the watercourses due to the effect of rainfall events. Therefore, the discharge of those effluents will lead to failure with watercourse quality parameters.

The present study aimed to investigate the ability of a microbial consortium to produce biosurfactant in the presence of two carbon sources and also to evaluate the efficiency of the cell-free supernatant cultures to mobilize As from naturally contaminated soil. and Stenotrophomonas were the main microorganisms in the microbial consortium. The pH, the incubation time, the temperature, and the glucose and glycerol ratios in the culture medium are the main factors influencing biosurfactant production.

Objectives: To assess the measurement equivalence of the original paper version of an adapted tablet version of the EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D).

Methods: A randomly selected sample of 509 individuals aged 18 to 64 years from the general population responded to the EQ-5D at two time points separated by a minimum interval of 24 hours and were allocated to one of the following groups: test-retest group (tablet-tablet) or crossover group (paper-tablet and tablet-paper). Agreement between methods was determined using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the κ coefficient.

Arsenic and antimony compounds are used to treat endemic diseases, such as cancer, leishmaniasis, and schistosomiasis, in spite of their toxicity. Several studies seeking the development and characterization of nanocarrier systems such as liposomes are being carried out with the aim of developing new drug delivery systems and minimizing the toxicity of these drugs. Two full-length cDNA clones PoleFAD7 and PoleFAD8, encoding plastidial omega-3 fatty acid desaturases were isolated from purslane (Portulaca oleracea). The encoded enzymes convert linoleic to alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3). Three histidine clusters characteristic of fatty acid desaturases, a putative chloroplast transit peptide in the N-terminal, and three putative transmembrane domains were identified in the sequence.

Arsenite adsorption onto a protein-rich biomass and, more specifically, the chemical groups involved in the uptake were investigated using Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations. The study was based on spectroscopic analyses of raw and arsenic-loaded biomass as well as standard samples of amino acids and arsenic salts. The predominant secondary structure of the protein was identified as the beta-sheet type, with some contribution from alpha-helix structures.

The development of technologies based on the use of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to treat sulfate contaminated wastewaters has produced a cost-effective route to precipitate metals. In this work the effects of cadmium and manganese in the SRB growth rates were assessed. It was observed that duplication time is 50h in the presence of cadmium and 6h in the presence of manganese, thus showing that the SRB growth rate was more affected by the presence of cadmium.

This work describes a biological route for direct sorption of aqueous As(III) species, which are the most toxic and mobile arsenic species found in soils. Based upon the biochemical mechanisms that explain arsenic toxicity, we propose that a waste biomass with a high fibrous protein content obtained from chicken feathers can be used for selective As(III) adsorption. Prior to adsorption, the disulfide bridges present in the biomass are reduced by thioglycolate.
