Objectives: A prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) time of over 180 min is linked to poorer outcomes and higher mortality in cardiac surgery. This study examines how glypican-1 shedding, matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9), and the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β may contribute to endothelial dysfunction in patients undergoing on-pump surgery with an extended CPB.

Materials exhibiting topological transport properties, such as a large topological Hall resistivity, are crucial for next-generation spintronic devices. Here, we report large topological Hall resistivities in epitaxial supermalloy (NiFeMo) thin films with [100] and [111] orientations grown on single-crystal MgO (100) and AlO (0001) substrates, respectively. While X-ray reciprocal maps confirmed the epitaxial growth of the films, X-ray stress analyses revealed large residual strains in the films, inducing tetragonal distortions of the cubic NiFeMo unit cells.

Stroke continues to be a major adverse event in advanced congestive heart failure (CHF) patients after continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (CF-LVAD) implantation. Abnormalities in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) have been critically implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and cerebral ischemia. We hypothesize that prior stroke may be associated with systemic mitochondrial OxPhos abnormalities, and impaired more in post-CF-LVAD patients with risk of developing new stroke.

Defect tolerance is a critical enabling factor for efficient lead-halide perovskite materials, but the current understanding is primarily on band-edge (cold) carriers, with significant debate over whether hot carriers can also exhibit defect tolerance. Here, this important gap in the field is addressed by investigating how intentionally-introduced traps affect hot carrier relaxation in CsPbX nanocrystals (X = Br, I, or mixture). Using femtosecond interband and intraband spectroscopy, along with energy-dependent photoluminescence measurements and kinetic modelling, it is found that hot carriers are not universally defect tolerant in CsPbX, but are strongly correlated to the defect tolerance of cold carriers, requiring shallow traps to be present (as in CsPbI).

Using both first principles and analytical approaches, we investigate the role of a transverse electric field in tuning the electrical, thermoelectric, optical and transport properties of a buckled tetragonal silicene (TS) structure. The transverse electric field transforms the linear spectrum to parabolic at the Fermi level and opens a band gap. The gap is similar at the two Dirac points present in the irreducible Brillouin zone of the TS structure and increases in proportion to the applied field strength.

Sediments underlying marine hypoxic zones are huge sinks of unreacted complex organic matter, where despite acute O limitation, obligately aerobic bacteria thrive, and steady depletion of organic carbon takes place within a few meters below the seafloor.
