Objectives: This study aimed to determine if the presence of corrective saccades during video head impulse test (vHIT) stimulation of the bilateral posterior semicircular canals (PSCs) correlated with other vestibular test results, demographics, symptoms, or diagnoses.

Design: This study was a retrospective chart review where 1006 subjects' vHIT records were screened with 17 subjects meeting inclusion criteria for isolated bilateral PSC saccades.

Results: Of the 1006 patients undergoing vHIT testing, only 1.

  • Meniere disease, responsible for 15% of vestibular disorders, lacks an effective treatment to manage vertigo episodes, prompting further research into potential therapies.
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the medication venlafaxine against a placebo in alleviating symptoms of Meniere disease in a controlled clinical trial over 22 weeks.
  • A total of 40 patients participated, receiving either venlafaxine or placebo, with key measures focusing on the frequency of vertigo episodes and patients' overall health-related quality of life.

Objective: To evaluate laryngeal penetration and aspiration in upright and side-lying positions in children with unilateral vocal cord paralysis (VCP) who underwent modified barium swallow study (MBSS).

Methods: A retrospective chart review (Pro00089051) of pediatric patients who were diagnosed with unilateral VCP and underwent MBSS was performed. Patients were identified using diagnostic code for VCP and based on diagnosis via flexible laryngoscopy.

Objectives: To analyze characteristics of children treated for laryngomalacia to determine predictive factors and provide an updated meta-analysis on outcomes.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines from inception to May 2, 2023, using CINAHL, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Study screening, data extraction, quality rating, and risk of bias assessment were performed by 2 independent reviewers.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate how often vascular events occur in patients with head and neck cancer, reviewing 146 primary studies up to April 2023.
  • - Out of over 1.18 million patients analyzed, about 4.3% experienced a vascular event, with radiation therapy presenting the highest risk compared to surgery and chemotherapy.
  • - The findings suggest that routine anticoagulation isn't necessary for these patients, indicating that vascular events affect 4%-5% of them, particularly those receiving radiation treatment.

Background: The placebo effect observed in clinical trials evaluating medical treatments for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is not well understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to characterize the placebo effect present within CRS outcomes.

Methods: A systematic review of PubMed, Scopus, and Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Nursing (CINAHL) was performed.

Article Synopsis
  • Pathogenic free-living amoebae (pFLA) pose serious risks for central nervous system infections, making it crucial to find new chemical agents to fight these pathogens.
  • The study focuses on glucokinase (Glck), a metabolic enzyme with minimal similarity to human counterparts, as a promising target for developing inhibitors.
  • Using a novel "shotgun" multifragment kinetic target-guided synthesis (KTGS) strategy, researchers identified 12 effective inhibitors against three different pFLA glucokinase enzymes, showcasing KTGS's effectiveness even in the absence of detailed structural information.

Infection with pathogenic free-living amoebae, including Naegleria fowleri, spp., and Balamuthia mandrillaris, can lead to life-threatening illnesses, primarily because of catastrophic central nervous system involvement. Efficacious treatment options for these infections are lacking, and the mortality rate due to infection is high.

Introduction: Signs and symptoms attributed to erupting primary teeth are commonly known as "teething". Its existence is controversial with concern that overusing this term might mask other illnesses and some treatments may be unnecessary or harmful. Parents/carers can access over-the-counter remedies and may seek professional advice.

causes a prevalent human infection for which only the acute stage has an FDA-approved therapy. To find inhibitors of both the acute stage parasites and the persistent cyst stage that causes a chronic infection, we repurposed a compound library containing known inhibitors of parasitic hexokinase, the first step in the glycolysis pathway, along with a larger collection of new structural derivatives. The focused screen of 22 compounds showed a 77% hit rate (>50% multistage inhibition) and revealed a series of aminobenzamide-linked picolinic acids with submicromolar potency against both parasite forms.

Knowledge on the pygmy grasshoppers of Australia is, despite the numerous endemics being described from this unique continent, still scarce. Of interest is the genus group, including genera Storozhenko, 2019, Storozhenko, 2019, Storozhenko, 2019 and Sjöstedt, 1921. The systematic position of this group, currently assigned to Batrachideinae (Bufonidini), is probably not correct.

Objective: A review of the distribution of d₃mft scores for Wales was undertaken to inform decisions on future reporting of decay experience. Visual examination of data from one survey suggested that caries in Wales is distributed along an exponential decay curve.

Basic Research Design: Weighted d₃mft data from 2007/8, 2011/12 and 2014/15 was utilised.

Recent genomic analyses have provided substantial evidence for past periods of gene flow from polar bears (Ursus maritimus) into Alaskan brown bears (Ursus arctos), with some analyses suggesting a link between climate change and genomic introgression. However, because it has mainly been possible to sample bears from the present day, the timing, frequency, and evolutionary significance of this admixture remains unknown. Here, we analyze genomic DNA from three additional and geographically distinct brown bear populations, including two that lived temporally close to the peak of the last ice age.
