Cutaneous horn occurring on the vermilion border of the lower lip.

A case of cutaneous horn of the lower lip is presented. The paper highlights the need for careful management of such lesions due to the high incidence of malignant or premalignant histology.

Postimplantation expression patterns indicate a role for the mouse forkhead/HNF-3 alpha, beta and gamma genes in determination of the definitive endoderm, chordamesoderm and neuroectoderm.

The HNF-3 alpha, beta and gamma genes constitute a family of transcription factors that are required for hepatocyte-specific gene expression of a number of genes, e.g. transthyretin, alpha-1 antitrypsin and tyrosine aminotransferase.

Six members of the mouse forkhead gene family are developmentally regulated.

The 110-aa forkhead domain defines a class of transcription factors that have been shown to be developmentally regulated in Drosophila melanogaster and Xenopus laevis. The forkhead domain is necessary and sufficient for target DNA binding as shown for the rat hepatic nuclear factor 3 (HNF3) gene family. We have cloned six forkhead gene family members from a mouse genomic library in addition to the mouse equivalents of the genes for HNF3 alpha, -beta, and -gamma.

A large conductance K(+)-selective channel of guinea pig villus enterocytes is Ca2+ independent.

The presence of K(+)-selective channels has been probed in enterocytes isolated from guinea pig small intestinal villi by the patch-clamp technique. A channel with a single-channel conductance of approximately 130 pS was observed in excised inside-out patches bathed in symmetrical K+. A change in the K+ concentration in the intracellular aspect of the membrane altered the current-voltage relationship as expected from the constant-field equation when it is assumed that K+ is the only permeant ion.

An intracranial tumour causing dental pain.

A case is reported of a glioma of the parietal lobe in which the early symptoms mimicked dental pain and led the patient to consult his dental practitioner in the first instance. The need for careful investigation of unusual presentations of facial pain is stressed.

The Msh-like homeobox genes define domains in the developing vertebrate eye.

The mouse Hox-7.1 gene has previously been shown to be related to the Drosophila Msh homeobox-containing gene. Here we report the isolation of a new member of this family which resides at an unlinked chromosomal location and has been designated Hox-8.

A simple appliance to correct mandibular deviation following hemimandibulectomy.

An appliance is described for the rehabilitation of patients following hemimandibulectomy. It has the advantages, over traditional prostheses, of being quick, simple and cheap to produce.

Cystic fibrosis and sinusitis.

Children from the University of Alberta Cystic Fibrosis Clinic were evaluated for nasal polyposis and sinusitis. The results of office examination, coronal CT scanning, and functional endoscopic sinus surgery are compared. Sinonasal disease was found to be ubiquitous in children with cystic fibrosis evaluated with coronal CT scanning.

Effect of penbutolol and propranolol on normal airway response to salbutamol.

The specific airway conductance (sGaw) response of eight normal men to inhaled salbutamol, 200, 600, and 1800 micrograms, was measured on 3 separate days. On each occasion subjects received either placebo, long-acting propranolol (160 mg), or penbutolol (40 mg) orally in a double-blind manner after baseline lung function determination. After placebo, mean sGaw rose from a baseline of 2.

The effect of single doses of penbutolol and propranolol L.A. on psychomotor performance.

The effect of single oral doses of penbutolol (40 mg) and propranolol L.A. (160 mg) on psychomotor performance of 12 normal individuals has been investigated.
