A variety of easy-to-use commercial bioelectrical impedance appliances are available. The aim of this study was to examine the usefulness of a commercially available body composition meter using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) by comparing its measurement results with those obtained from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The participants were 443 children aged from 10 to 14 years (226 boys and 217 girls).

However, the factors that affect perceived health competence have not been investigated. We investigated the associations among perceived health competence, effortful control, self-control, and personality traits in university students and proposed a model of how these factors affect perceived health competence.

Height, weight, and body composition in 270 female university students were measured. The questionnaire on body shape perception, desired body shape, dieting experience, current, and past exercise habits, exercise preference, and eating behaviors were administered.

Methods: The participants, 555 Japanese university students (177 men, 378 women), completed a questionnaire about their height and weight, living with family, wake time, frequency of eating breakfast, appetite for breakfast, attitude toward breakfast, personality traits, and self-esteem. Appetite for breakfast was evaluated with a four-point Likert-type scale.
CYP2D6 metabolizes 20-25% of all clinically used drugs and its complex genetic polymorphism is a major determinant of drug safety and efficacy. We investigated the basis for the functional difference between the two common alleles *2 (g.2851C>T + g.

A population-based sample of 502 Japanese school children who were fifth- and sixth-graders in elementary schools and first- and second-graders in junior high schools was assessed. A sample was randomly split into two subsamples, one for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and another for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).

Microdialysis methods were utilized to quantify the extracellular content of glutamate (Glu) in the region of MnPO. Microinjection of ANG II (10 M) into the SFO significantly increased the release of Glu in the MnPO in the rats under the condition that water is available for drinking and the rats under the condition that water is not available for drinking.

Methods: The participants, 1546 Japanese university students (964 males, 582 females), completed a questionnaire which asked for their current height and weight, ideal height and weight, eating behaviors, perceived stress, and personality traits.
Results: Restrained eating was higher in normal-weight participants compared with underweight participants in both males and females (p < 0.
Purpose: Recent studies have shown that perceived social support is associated with gratitude and sense of coherence, but evidence for this concept remains scarce. In the present study, we investigated relationships between social support, gratitude, and sense of coherence, focusing on the construct of and source of social support among young women.
Methods: The study was conducted in 2014 in Japan.
Divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) is a mammalian iron (Fe) transporter and also transports Cadmium (Cd) in vitro. This study compared Cd absorption in DMT1-dysfunctional MK/Rej-(mk)/(mk) mice (mk/mk mice) and in DMT1-functional, Fe-deficient wild-type (WT) mice, to clarify the role of DMT1 in intestinal Cd absorption in vivo. Mice were given 1 ppm CdCl2 aq in drinking water for 2 weeks, and the concentrations of Cd and Fe in liver, kidney, and intestinal epithelium were subsequently determined.

CYP175A1 is a thermostable P450 Monooxygenase from Thermus thermophilus HB27, demonstrating in vivo activity towards beta-carotene. Activity of CYP175A1 was reconstituted in vitro using artificial electron transport proteins. First results were obtained in the mixture with a crude Escherichia coli cell extract at 37 degrees C.

All compounds showed higher cytotoxic activity against tumor cell lines than against normal cells. Among the 6 compounds, SC-3, SC-4 and SC-5, which have one to three methoxy groups, showed higher tumor specificity and water solubility.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFProduction and secretion of steroid hormones throughout the ovarian cycle occurs in a highly episodic and coordinated fashion that requires precise and finely tuned regulatory mechanisms. The regulation of ovarian steroidogenesis by the gonadotropin follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) as well as by other factors occurs, at least in part, at the level of expression of the genes encoding steroidogenic enzymes. The present study is aimed at the elucidation of regulatory mechanisms by which cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and protein kinase C regulate cytochrome P450scc (CYP11A) gene expression in bovine granulosa cells in primary culture.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFMaintenance of optimal steriodogenic capacity in the adrenal cortex requires the action of the peptide hormone ACTH. Upon binding to its cell surface receptor ACTH activates adenylate cyclase leading to elevated levels of intracellular cAMP which in turn enhances transcription of the genes encoding the enzymes involved in the conversion of cholesterol to the steroid hormones. By deletion analysis of their upstream regions, the genes encoding the steroid hydroxylases P450c17, P450c21 and P450scc (CYP17, CYP21B and CYP11A, respectively) were found to contain unique cAMP-responsive sequences (CRSs).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe product of the CYP11A gene, cholesterol side chain cleavage cytochrome P450, catalyzes the initial step of steroidogenesis. A major mechanism whereby steroid hydroxylase gene transcription is regulated in the adrenal cortex requires the pituitary peptide hormone, ACTH, which acts via cAMP. We have previously identified a transcriptional enhancer in the 5'-flanking sequence [-183 to -83 base pairs (bp)] of the bovine CYP11A gene, which activates transcription of a beta-globin promoter/reporter gene in transiently transfected mouse Y1 adrenocortical tumor cells in response to the activator of adenylate cyclase, forskolin.
