Article Synopsis
  • - Pituitary neoplasms make up 15% of intracranial tumors, affecting around 20% of people, prompting a study using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) to explore disparities in endoscopic pituitary surgery outcomes.
  • - An analysis from 2010 to 2020 showed a decline in hospitalization rates for this surgery and highlighted that most patients were aged 25 to 64, with many having no other health issues.
  • - Disparities were observed in racial and socioeconomic groups, with Black and Hispanic patients facing more complications and higher mortality risks post-surgery compared to White patients, especially those on Medicaid.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between patient frailty status and outcomes of transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) surgeries, analyzing data from a multicenter database between 2015 and 2020.
  • Patients were categorized into low and high frailty groups based on a modified frailty index, and various surgical outcomes and complications were compared between these cohorts.
  • Results indicated higher rates of complications and unplanned readmissions in the frail group, alongside longer hospital stays and a greater likelihood of being discharged to institutions rather than their homes, highlighting frailty as a significant predictor of surgical risk in TLIF patients.

Background: Myelomeningocele (MMC) is the most serious form of spina bifida, a congenital defect in neural tube development. Defect closure in a patient with an extremely low birth weight presents unique challenges and risks; lower birth weight is associated with multiple organ system concerns, homeostasis is difficult, and local tissue is underdeveloped. To the authors' knowledge, the present case is the lowest reported weight (490 g) for a neonate with postnatal MMC repair.

Objective: To evaluate on a national scale how frailty status (stratified using the 5-item Modified Frailty Index (mFI-5)) affects the operative characteristics of and complications after long-segment spinal fusion (LSF) for adult spinal deformity (ASD).

Methods: Adults undergoing LSF of ≥3 vertebrae in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database years 2015-2020 were split into 2 cohorts: nonfrail with mFI = 0 or 1; frail with mFI ≥2. Demographics, operative characteristics, and 30-day complications were contrasted between the cohorts using the Student's t-test, the Fisher's exact test, or a multivariate analysis when appropriate.
