Ultrastruct Pathol

The ultrastructure of four well-differentiated adenocarcinomas of the gallbladder was investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy and compared with the ultrastructure of nonneoplastic mucosa in the same specimens and of the mucosa of gallbladders with gallstones. The tumor cells seen by scanning electron microscopy had severe disorganization of the regular arrangement of columnar cells. They were bizarre in shape and size and were covered with less developed pleomorphic microvilli that were irregularly distributed.

Morphological investigations were performed using light microscopy, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In the UW-stored livers, the appearance of blebs derived from hepatocytes and the destruction of sinusoidal endothelial cells (SEC) occurred more slowly than in the EC-stored livers.

The survival rate was significantly higher in the STS group than in the non-STS group. Light microscopy enabled us to note that congestion in the terminal portal veins and sinusoids occurred either slightly earlier or to a higher degree in the non-STS group.

Changes in the sinusoids of rat livers stored in cold (2 degrees C) Euro-Collins solution for various periods were observed using combined scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The sinusoidal endothelial cells were vulnerable to cold ischemia. Fenestrations of the endothelial cells were enlarged and became mesh-like after a 4-h preservation period.

The effects of partial hepatectomy on plasma disappearance and biliary excretion of indocyanine green (ICG) have been studied in rats and correlated with morphometric changes of hepatocellular microtubules. The plasma disappearance rate of ICG was in good accord with recovery of liver weight after partial hepatectomy. Biliary excretion of ICG per 100 g liver significantly increased between 3 h and 7 days postoperatively.

Centered around an eight-track instrumentation tape recorder, the system solves several problems encountered in gathering this type of research data: (1) slowly changing variables are digitized and compressed onto a single track by recording them in one serial message, allowing for recording many more variables than there are tape tracks available; (2) simultaneous analog recording allows retention of original data for variables that may be processed subsequently by multiple schemes; (3) data acquisition is verified with both analog chart recording and numerical video display monitors; (4) off-line computer processing time is decreased at least twofold by using tape playback speeds faster than the recording speed; (5) cost is kept low by using an inexpensive 1/4-inch (0.64-cm) tape medium and dedicated microcomputers; and (6) the system is unobtrusive, portable, and easily reconfigured for different clinical studies.

The clinical and morphologic characteristics of this case are documented, and the literature concerning this type of tumor is reviewed. The tumor differed histologically from the pleomorphic carcinoma, which occurs most commonly in the lung, and showed diverse pleomorphic manifestation with benign looking osteoclast-like multinucleated cells and bizarre giant cells.

A compact 4-W gas-stream heater for use with ventilated sweating capsules is described. The heating element is constructed from two modified 75-omega power resistors connected in parallel and contained in the capsule gas inlet tube. Heater power is controlled with integrated circuits which compare the output of a thermocouple, measuring either capsule skin or air temperature, with a predetermined target temperature.

Untreated samples characteristically showed an exponential relationship between log p and wf. This characteristic was retained but altered quantitatively by factors which increase and decrease the ratio of bound to unbound water, by lipid extraction, and (following extraction) by electrolyte presoak.
