Seventeen biocatalytically active Streptomyces strains with the ability to oxidize avermectin to 4"-oxo-avermectin in a regioselective manner have been discovered in a screen of 3,334 microorganisms. The enzymes responsible for this oxidation reaction in these biocatalytically active strains were found to be cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYPs) and were termed Ema1 to Ema17.

The aim of the study was to draw attention to an association between the thyroid and cardiovascular diseases. The main topic was to lay emphasis on the importance of cardiovascular diseases caused by subclinical hyper- and hypothyroidism in the relation to the practice.

The consequent failure to form detached colonies represents a major obstacle for microbiological and genetic studies, since single cells representing discrete genetic events cannot be reliably separated and propagated as clones. The MglA protein, the product of the mglA gene, has been shown to be a central regulator of gliding motility and swarming in the related myxobacterium Myxococcus xanthus.

Background: In 1998 a joint initiative of the Hungarian School of Public Health and the National Public Health Service created a network of sentinel stations based in primary care facilities in four Hungarian counties. The aim was to establish a system that will provide valid data on morbidity of selected diseases in Hungary.
Methods: Based on standardized protocols, the participating centres have continuously reported data on the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, and some malignant diseases, as well as supplying denominator data.
The physiological and morphological responses to water stress induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG) or by withholding water were investigated in Aegilops biuncialis Vis. genotypes differing in the annual rainfall of their habitat (1050, 550 and 225 mm year) and in Triticum aestivum L. wheat genotypes differing in drought tolerance.

The genes for the PKS are flanked by genes encoding homologs of enzymes that are involved in the urea cycle, valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis and energy metabolism. While the disruption of the PKS genes by insertional inactivation was not expected to abolish the production of spinosyns, no differences were found in the antibacterial, antifungal, or insecticidal activities either of the parental and the knockout mutant strains under the growth conditions tested.

The slow growth, swarming motility and general intransigence of the strain for genetic manipulations make industrial strain development, large-scale fermentation and combinatorial biosynthetic manipulation of the soraphen producer very challenging. To provide a better host for soraphen A production and molecular engineering, the biosynthetic gene cluster for this secondary metabolite was integrated into the chromosome of Streptomyces lividans ZX7.

Paricalcitol has anticancer activity in prostate cancer cells. We tested the effects of paricalcitol on the HL-60 leukemia cells, studying cellular differentiation, cell cycle changes, apoptosis and cellular proliferation.

One hundred forty-eight cases of t(9;22)(q34;q11) were identified for the period September 1993 through August 2001. The presentation of 124 cases (84%) was that of typical CML in chronic phase.

Design: The School of Public Health, University of Debrecen, Hungary and the National Public Health and Medical Officer Service the first time launched a morbidity sentinel stations network of general practitioners in four counties in Hungary in May 1998. Within the framework of this program the participating general practitioners reported the prevalence data of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, and major malignant diseases at the beginning, and from than on continuously report the incidence of these diseases.
A computer simulation program was used to optimize the separation for six kava pyrones and two unidentified components obtaining the best resolution and the shortest run time. With DryLab it was possible to find the best separation conditions without running a large number of possible combination of variables in the laboratory. Additionally, due to the systematic progress in method development a new eluent was found with excellent properties, namely 2-propanol.

It will be shown, on the basis of selected examples, that the general expectations about how the experimental parameters have to be adjusted for better resolution does not cover all chances for resolution improvement. The tool for understanding the method and to discover all chances for increasing selectivity is the resolution map of a method.

We isolated and characterized three biosynthetic genes that encode an acyl carrier protein, a beta-ketoacyl-acyl carrier protein synthase III, and a protein of unknown function, all of which collectively allow heterologous production of 2-hexyl-5-propylresorcinol in Escherichia coli. Two regulatory genes exhibiting similarity to members of the AraC family of transcriptional regulators are also present in the identified gene cluster.

Erythema multiforme is a skin condition frequently associated with herpes simplex virus and has a tendency to recur. Oral acyclovir has been successful in suppression of the disease. Here we report a patient who had recurrent erythema multiforme associated with recurrent polyarthritis that responded to oral acyclovir suppression therapy.
