The major histocompatibility complex class III tumor necrosis factor-lymphotoxin (TNF-LT) region (6p21.3) was investigated as a possible susceptibility locus for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Inheritance of five TNF microsatellite markers was determined in 50 multiplex families.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTwo cases are described of patients who previously had undergone myocardial revascularization with left internal mammary arterial (LIMA) grafts, who presented with recurrent cardiac symptoms and clinical evidence of left subclavian stenosis. Arteriography revealed significant subclavian stenosis with poor or absent filling of the LIMA grafts in both cases. Following successful percutaneous transfemoral angioplasty (PTA) of the lesions, there was improved flow in both LIMA grafts, with symptomatic improvement in both patients.

It is not known, however, whether this event contributes to cell injury or if it results from passive equilibration of calcium ion concentrations across the membranes of irreversibly damaged cells. This study was performed to determine whether the cellular hypercalcemia produced by bile acid exposure in gastric cells is reversible and to determine whether the source of this hypercalcemia is from intracellular stores of calcium, extracellular sources, or both.

The aim of this study was to characterize the rise in cytosolic free Ca2+ associated with bile salt injury and its association with cell injury and death. Rabbit gastric mucosal cells were preloaded with the Ca2+ indicator fura 2-acetoxymethyl ester (fura 2-AM) for 20 min at 37 degrees C and then exposed to graded concentrations of the bile salt deoxycholate (DC).

The patients who undergo these procedures should continue screening with breast physical examination and mammography. The long-term impact of breast biopsy on these screening modalities has not been well studied.

Method: Thirty-seven outpatients (11 men and 26 women) meeting DSM-III-R criteria for major depressive disorder were randomly assigned to receive either placebo or 4 mg/day of oral dexamethasone for 4 days. Baseline Hamilton depression scale scores were compared with scores obtained 14 days after the first dose of study medication.
Purpose: To define patterns of care and outcome for pediatric appendectomy.
Methods: A study was designed to evaluate all pediatric appendectomies performed in the 147 Department of Defense hospitals worldwide. Cases of nonincidental appendectomy were identified through discharge diagnoses and operative logs, and 98.
A highly informative microsatellite marker, D7S485, from the T-cell receptor gamma (TCRG) locus, has been used to study segregation of TCRG genes in 26 multiplex rheumatoid arthritis (RA) families. We used the sib-pair method to assess excess identity-by-descent sharing among affected members in these families and the LINKAGE package of programs was used to calculate two-point lod scores for the D7S485 marker. There was no evidence for segregation of TCRG genes with RA in affected siblings and significantly negative lod scores were obtained from linkage analyses using both autosomal dominant and recessive models of inheritance.

Methods: Twenty-eight multiplex RA families were recruited from 3 rheumatology outpatient departments. All members were genotyped for a highly informative microsatellite (V beta 6.
Objective: To determine the ability of luteal phase length determined by basal body temperature (BBT) pattern and a midluteal serum progesterone level to predict the result of an endometrial biopsy in a subsequent cycle.
Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 141 women with a history of infertility who were being evaluated for luteal function. The luteal phase length determined from a BBT chart of one menstrual cycle was compared to a single midluteal serum progesterone level from a second menstrual cycle.
Screening mammography continues to play a key role in the early diagnosis of non-palpable breast cancer. Approximately 5% of patients will have lesions on their mammograms that appear neither clearly benign nor malignant. The proper management of these patients is not well defined.

Subjects And Methods: Twenty-seven CT scans and 27 abdominal radiographs with the patient in the left lateral decubitus position were obtained prospectively in 17 patients after uncomplicated abdominal surgery. Fifteen patients were examined 3 days after surgery and 12 were examined 6 days after surgery.

The patients were preoperatively assessed for the following risk factors: previous catheter placement, an absolute neutrophil count less than 500/mm3, a platelet count less than 50,000/mm3, a BUN value greater than 60 mg/dL or a serum creatinine level greater than 2.5 mg/dL, a prothrombin time greater than 1.

Among 30 patients with benign obstructive disease, CT showed pruning of the intrahepatic ducts in four patients (13%), beading in four (13%), and skip dilatations in one (3%). Among 54 patients with malignant obstructive disease, CT illustrated pruning in eight (15%) patients, beading in 11 (20%), and skip dilatations in two (4%).

Angiographic follow-up and complete lipid and fatty acid results were available in 82 patients. Restenosis occurred in 37/82 (45%).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPrevious work from this laboratory has indicated that murine memory T cells differ from virgin T cells in that the former are more resistant to agents that alter intracellular [Ca]i. We have used this difference to devise a method for separating virgin from memory T cells by centrifugation over an ionomycin-containing Percoll step gradient after brief exposure to 2 microM ionomycin. Under these conditions, those T cells that are most sensitive to ionomycin-induced changes in [Ca]i become more dense and therefore travel further into the Percoll/ionomycin gradient than cells that are more resistant to ionomycin.
