Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate 3-year efficacy of orthokeratology lenses (OKL) in controlling axial length progression in myopic Scandinavian children. Through a cross-over design of the control group to compare the treatment efficacy in younger versus older children, with the latter having higher cycloplegic spherical refractive error (cSEQ) at treatment initiation. Further, the study aimed to evaluate the safety of the treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined the effects of low-dose atropine treatment on choroidal thickness changes in Danish children aged 6-12 with myopia over a period of 2 years and a subsequent 1-year wash-out compared to a placebo group.
  • The results showed that children with longer axial lengths had thinner choroidal thickness at baseline, but there were no significant changes in choroidal thickness for the atropine groups compared to placebo after 3 years.
  • Overall, the findings suggested that choroidal thickness remained stable in these children during the follow-up period, with a thinner choroid possibly leading to increased axial elongation in myopia.

This study investigated the dynamics of reciprocal phenotypic plasticity entailing inducible defense and offense in freshwater ciliate communities in response to altered resource supply and the extent of intraspecific trait variation. Communities consisted of Euplotes octocarinatus (intraguild prey) capable of inducible defense to escape predation, Stylonychia mytilus (intraguild predator) capable of inducible offense to expand its prey spectrum, and Cryptomonas sp. (algal resource).

Vast amounts of pathogen genomic, demographic and spatial data are transforming our understanding of SARS-CoV-2 emergence and spread. We examined the drivers of molecular evolution and spread of 291,791 SARS-CoV-2 genomes from Denmark in 2021. With a sequencing rate consistently exceeding 60%, and up to 80% of PCR-positive samples between March and November, the viral genome set is broadly whole-epidemic representative.

Introduction: Surgical procedures in contemporary practice frequently employ energy-based devices, yet comprehensive education surrounding their safety and effectiveness remains deficient. We propose an innovative course for residents that aims to provide basic electrosurgery knowledge and promote the safe use of these devices.

Methods: We developed a simulated training course for first-year general surgery and orthopedic residents.

During sea-level exercise, blood flow through intrapulmonary arteriovenous anastomoses (IPAVA) in humans without a patent foramen ovale (PFO) is negatively correlated with pulmonary pressure. Yet, it is unknown whether the superior exercise capacity of Tibetans well adapted to living at high altitude is the result of lower pulmonary pressure during exercise in hypoxia, and whether their cardiopulmonary characteristics are significantly different from lowland natives of comparable ancestry (e.g.

Purpose: In many countries, outpatient and inpatient care are separated. During hospitalization, therefore, switching the outpatient medication to medication of the hospital formulary is required.

Methods: We newly designed a switching algorithm in six switching steps (S0-S5) and conducted a study at Bundeswehr Hospital Hamburg (300 beds, 80% civilians).

Purpose: To translate and cross-culturally adapt PREP2 into Danish and to investigate the face validity and reliability of Danish PREP2 through cognitive interviewing, Rasch and reliability analyses.

Methods: The Danish PREP2 was translated using a standardized procedure and then pretested following the Three-Steps-Interviews (TSTI) process. A total of 15 myopic children aged 7-14 wearing either orthokeratology lenses (ortho-k) or single-vision spectacles (SVS) were included in pretesting comprising cognitive interviews and Rasch analysis.

Disturbances in gut microbiota are prevalent in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis (UC). However, whether these disturbances contribute to development of the disease or are a result of the disease is unclear. In pairs of human twins discordant for IBD, the healthy twin has a higher risk of developing IBD and a gut microbiota that is more similar to that of IBD patients as compared with healthy individuals.

Purpose: The Health, Food, Purchases and Lifestyle (SMIL) cohort is a prospective open Danish cohort that collects electronic consumer purchase data, which can be linked to Danish nationwide administrative health and social registries. This paper provides an overview of the cohort's baseline characteristics and marginal differences in the monetary percentage spent on food groups by sex, age and hour of the day.

Participants: As of 31 December 2022, the cohort included 11 214 users of a smartphone-based receipt collection application who consented to share their unique identification number for linkage to registries in Denmark.

Background And Objective: Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and targeted biopsies reduce overdiagnosis of prostate cancer(PC). It is uncertain how this strategy performs for low PSA levels. The objective was to investigate the PI-RADS distribution, frequency and characteristics of screen-detected PC with PSA of 1.

Background: Prevention and management of childhood overweight involves the entire family. We aimed to investigate purchase patterns in households with at least one member with overweight in childhood by describing expenditure on different food groups.

Methods: This Danish register-based cohort study included households where at least one member donated receipts concerning consumers purchases in 2019-2021 and at least one member had their Body mass index (BMI) measured in childhood within ten years prior to first purchase.

Cyber-wisdom is the ability to know and do the right thing at the right time, when using digital technologies, and is a concept that is gaining attention from educators. Whilst the theory and practice of cyber-wisdom education is established, to date there has been no attempt to investigate how the virtue of cyber-wisdom might be measured. This is a lacuna as it limits future research in the area, including, in particular, proximal evaluations of cyber-wisdom interventions.

In this work we have developed a high-speed Stokes polarimeter method based on simultaneous 4-channel imaging with a high-speed camera. Thus, current speed limitations of imaging polarimeters for wavelengths around 1 µm can be overcome, allowing a sub-ms polarization-resolved characterization of transverse mode instability (TMI). Additionally, the Stokes parameters of each individual mode are calculated by a simultaneous 4-beam mode reconstruction algorithm during post-processing and can be analyzed with unprecedented temporal resolution.

The effect of transverse mode instability (TMI) poses a fundamental obstacle for a further scaling of diffraction-limited, high-power fiber laser systems. In this work we present a theoretical and experimental study on the mitigation of TMI by modal birefringence in a polarization maintaining (PM) fiber. With the help of comprehensive simulations, we show that the thermally-induced refractive index grating responsible for TMI can be modified and washed out when light is coupled with a polarization input angle detuned from the main axes of the fiber.

Consumer purchase data (CPD) is a promising instrument to assess the impact of purchases on health, but is limited by the need for manual scanning, a lack of access to data from multiple retailers, and limited information on product data and health outcomes. Here we describe the My Purchases cohort, a web-app enabled, prospective collection of CPD, covering several large retail chains in Denmark, that enables linkage to health outcomes. The cohort included 459 participants as of July 03, 2023.

The prevalence of myopia is estimated to be 2.6 billion people worldwide and the percentage of individuals with sight-threatening high myopia (≤ -6 diopters) is increasing. Myopia is primarily caused by excessive axial elongation of the eyeball, and treatment modalities attempt to reduce this progression.

Background: In super obesity, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) may be insufficient why some surgeons advocate biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS), a more malabsorptive procedure. There is a paucity of evidence regarding results beyond 10 years, especially after BPD/DS. The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to compare the long-term outcome of BPD/DS, and RYGB in patients with super obesity, i.
