Aims: To compare the expression of the cell adhesion molecules intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), ELAM-1 (E-selectin), and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) in cutaneous leucocytoclastic and lymphocytic vasculitis.

Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on early lesional skin biopsy specimens of leucocytoclastic vasculitis (n = 14), lymphocytic vasculitis (n = 10), non-lesional skin (n = 12), and normal skin (n = 5). A standard immunoperoxidase technique was used to detect expression of ICAM-1, E-selectin, VCAM-1, and the cell markers CD11a, CD11b, CD11c, von Willebrand factor, CD3, CD68, and neutrophil elastase (NP57).

This paper provides an update on the contents and structure, forms and mode of data distribution of the Molecular Probe Data Base (MPDB), a database that collects and provides on-line information on the sequence, target gene, applications and bibliographic references of synthetic oligonucleotides. The recent data extension and the new means of accessing the database are discussed.

The proteins synthesized in the cytosol are several thousand, and the number of peptides potentially able to be bound by class I molecules they can generate is therefore huge. On the other hand, the actual number of peptide-class I complexes required for CTL activation is around 200. We focused on the peptides bound by B27 molecules and by the whole class I.

A new palatopharyngoplasty which allows good muscular reorientation as well as elongation of the soft palate with minimal morbidity and scarring has been developed, and 66 selected patients underwent the procedure during the period September 1989 to March 1993. The most important findings were reduced operative bleeding, good length and mobility of the soft palate, and minimal scarring. A total of seven fistulas (11%) developed.

Despite the knowledge of strong prognostic factors such as stage and performance status, the outcome of individual patients with non-small cell lung cancer is not yet predictable, although it has been observed that patients whose tumors contain K-ras gene mutations at codon 12 have a shortened survival. We compared response rate, toxicity and survival of patients with non-small cell lung cancer receiving carboplatin 325 mg/m2 on day 1 with either intravenous etoposide (100 mg/m2 days 1-3) or oral etoposide (50 mg/m2/day) for 21 consecutive days. Secondly, we sought to find whether K-ras mutations or their genotypes could help to distinguish tumor types with clinical implications on prognosis.

The effect of 13-cis-retinoic acid (cRA) and all-trans-retinoic acid (tRA) used alone or in combination with interferon alpha-2a (alpha-IFN 2a) was tested on three established human cell lines: KB (epidermoid carcinoma of the oral cavity), SCC-25 (tongue squamous cell carcinoma) and MCF-7 (mammary carcinoma). Both retinoids significantly decreased cell proliferation (growth curves) and colony forming efficiency (CFE) in all cell lines, in a dose-dependent way (at a concentration ranging from 10(-5) to 10(-9) M) and differing from line to line, following the pattern: MCF-7 > SCC-25 > KB. Retinoids at any concentration (already at 10(-7) M) combined with alpha-IFN 2a (ranging from 100 to 500 IU/ml) were more effective in inhibiting cell proliferation than each of the two compounds alone.

Vibration white finger or hand-arm vibration syndrome is the episodic blanching of the fingers in response to cold occurring in those who work with hand held vibrating tools. Clinically the condition differs from primary Raynaud's phenomenon as persistent paraesthesiae and pain are common in the hands and arms and these occur independently from the 'white attacks'. Symptoms can become severe enough to warrant a change of occupation.

The efficacy of surgery or radiotherapy as conventional treatment for stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is limited. Recent studies have pointed out that preoperative chemotherapy may improve survival. To reconcile the two approaches, we undertook a multidisciplinary randomized trial to examine the possible synergism between preoperative chemotherapy and surgery in improved survival.

Aneurysm of the portal vein is quite infrequent and its clinical manifestations is variable. The association between aneurysm of the extrahepatic portal vein and recurring obstructive jaundice has only been described on one occasion, one where there was also portal hypertension. One case of aneurysm of extrahepatic portal vein associated with recurring cholestasis is described.

Riboprinting was used to determine the relationships among strains belonging to 15 species of the genus Kluyveromyces. The small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA) was amplified using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and subjected to a battery of nine restriction enzymes. Similarity coefficients between strains were calculated based on shared and unique restriction fragments.

Some patients with unbalanced hepatic cirrhosis may develop a recidivant pleural leakage resulting in relevant gas interchange disorders. In the treatment of recidivant pleural leakage, evacuative thoracocentesis and pleurodesis may be used. If these procedures fail, pleurectomy or surgery may be used, although with relevant morbidity and mortality rates.

It has been proposed that tensin, in association with several other proteins, mediates the micro-filament-integrin link. Here we describe the isolation of clones spanning about 5 kb from the 3' end of tensin mRNA from cultured chick embryo chondrocyte and embryonic heart cDNA libraries. Tensin expression was investigated in cultured chick embryo cells.

Background: The aim of the present study was to assess the key microbiologic characteristics aid in the identification of Streptococcus anginosus in the laboratory and know the spectrum of clinical infections it produces.

Methods: From March 1991 to April 1992 all the isolated strains of clinical significant samples were collected. For identification the API 20 STREP (BioMérieux) system was used.

Human plasma fibronectin is a high molecular weight (530,000), multi-domain, modular glycoprotein, consisting of two nearly identical subunits disulfide-bridged close to their C-terminal ends. Three sites that can be differentially labeled with fluorescent probes are present on each fibronectin subunit, the transglutaminase-sensitive Gln3 residue and the two free sulfhydryl residues, Cys1201 and Cys2196. These sites are located, respectively, in the N-terminal heparin/fibrin-binding domain, between the central DNA and cell-binding domains, and just before the C-terminal fibrin-binding domain.

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is highly nontoxic for peripheral blood T cells and immunostimulatory enhancing T cell functions such as mitogenesis, interleukin-2 (IL-2) production, and growth in culture. NAC has been proposed for the treatment of AIDS based on its inhibition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication in cultured cells. Therefore its effect on normal T cells from 10 young donors and one elderly donor has been investigated as a prelude to clinical consideration.

The effect of medullary afferent vagal axotomy on NaCl-induced short-term and long-term taste aversion learning (TAL) was examined to assess the relevance of the vagus nerve in drug-induced TAL. The results show that medullary afferent vagal axotomy disrupts NaCl-induced short-term (nondelayed) TAL, while having no effect on learning acquired with the same product in long-term (delayed) TAL protocols. Acquisition of learning in delayed discrimination tasks may be mediated by alternative mechanisms of nonvagal nature, e.
