In the Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) variant of the Guillain-Barré syndrome, weakness is restricted to extraocular muscles and occasionally other craniobulbar muscles. Most MFS patients have serum antibodies against ganglioside type GQ1b of which the pathophysiological relevance is unclear. We examined the in vitro effects of MFS sera, MFS IgG, and a human monoclonal anti-GQ1b IgM antibody on mouse neuromuscular junctions (NMJs).

Background: Catecholamines hasten cardiac relaxation through beta-adrenergic receptors, presumably by phosphorylation of several proteins, but it is unknown which receptor subtypes are involved in human ventricle. We assessed the role of beta1- and beta2-adrenergic receptors in phosphorylating proteins implicated in ventricular relaxation.

A 32-year-old female presented with a 2-year history of fluctuating generalized weakness including extraocular, bulbar, and limb muscles, suggesting myasthenia gravis, but with poor response to pyridostigmine and unusual electromyographic findings. After rest, power increased on repeated maximal contractions, followed by progressive weakness. There were decremental responses at low-frequency stimulation, but incremental responses at high frequencies, and single stimuli evoked repetitive compound muscle action potentials.

In order to study the effect of synaptic contact on the amounts of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and acetylcholine (ACh) in the nerve terminals and on their ability to release ACh, a freeze-thaw procedure was developed as a means to induce long lasting degeneration of rat soleus muscle. It was found that 4 days after the freeze thaw procedure the preparation did not contract upon direct electric stimulation and the level of creatine kinase (CK) was below detection. The preparation contained about 15% of the ChAT activity and 15% of the ACh content of the controls.

The role of beta3- and other putative atypical beta-adrenoceptors in human white adipocytes and right atrial appendage has been investigated using CGP 12177 and novel phenylethanolamine and aryloxypropanolamine beta3-adrenoceptor (beta3AR) agonists with varying intrinsic activities and selectivities for human cloned betaAR subtypes. The ability to demonstrate beta1/2AR antagonist-insensitive (beta3 or other atypical betaAR-mediated) responses to CGP 12177 was critically dependent on the albumin batch used to prepare and incubate the adipocytes. Four aryloxypropanolamine selective beta3AR agonists (SB-226552, SB-229432, SB-236923, SB-246982) consistently elicited beta1/2AR antagonist-insensitive lipolysis.

Some blockers of beta1- and beta2-adrenoceptors cause cardiostimulant effects through an atypical beta-adrenoceptor (putative beta4-adrenoceptor) that resembles the beta3-adrenoceptor. It is likely but not proven that the putative beta4-adrenoceptor is genetically distinct from the beta3-adrenoceptor. This paper discusses the relationship between longitudinal analysis of inter-individual (co-)variation and time series analysis of intra-individual (co-)variation. To set the stage for this discussion, first a tutorial overview of modern techniques of multivariate time series analysis is given which highlights the central role of rate-space modeling. Some increasingly general instances of the state-spuce model are presented, followed by a concise description of two recent applications involving nonlinear state-space modeling of oscillatory finger motion and nonlinear growth, respectively.

In this article we introduce a continuous time implementation of adaptive resonance theory (ART). ART designed by Grossberg concerns neural networks that self-organize stable pattern recognition categories of arbitrary sequences of input patterns. In contrast to the current implementations of ART we introduce a complete implementation of an ART network, including all regulatory and logical functions, as a system of ordinary differential equations capable of stand-alone running in real time.

In human heart there is now evidence for the involvement of four beta-adrenoceptor populations, three identical to the recombinant beta 1-, beta 2- and beta 3-adrenoceptors, and a fourth as yet uncloned putative beta-adrenoceptor population, which we designate provisionally as the cardiac putative beta 4-adrenoceptor. This review described novel features of beta-adrenoceptors as modulators of cardiac systolic and diastolic function. We also discuss evidence for modulation by unoccupied beta 1- and beta 2-adrenoceptors.

A recent development in the cognitive modelling of visual selective attention is the incorporation of design principles derived from the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the primate visual system. In this paper, we describe these recent 'neurocognitive' models in more detail, point out the underlying neurobiological principles, and show that in all cases attention is implemented as an energetical resource which can be directed to representations and pathways in the system. In the second part of the paper, we specify the predictions derived from this 'energy hypothesis', and evaluate available data pertaining to this issue.

Chronic treatment of patients with beta-blockers causes atrial inotropic hyperresponsiveness through beta 2-adrenoceptors, 5-HT4 receptors and H2-receptors but apparently not through beta 1-adrenoceptors despite data claiming an increased beta 1-adrenoceptor density from homogenate binding studies. We have addressed the question of beta 1-adrenoceptor sensitivity by determining the inotropic potency and intrinsic activity of the beta 1-adrenoceptor selective partial agonist (-)-RO363 and by carrying out both homogenate binding and quantitative beta-adrenoceptor autoradiography in atria obtained from patients treated or not treated with beta-blockers.

The stochastic processes of postural center-of-pressure profiles were examined in 3- and 5-year-old children, young adult students (mean 20 years), and an elderly age group (mean 67 years). Subjects stood still in an upright bipedal stance on a force platform under vision and nonvision conditions. The time evolutionary properties of the center-of-pressure dynamic were examined using basic stochastic process models.

It is shown empirically, analytically and in simulations that common and average referenced recordings differentially affect the accuracy of equivalent source estimates. This effect is mediated by the influence of the reference on noise correlations. The general conclusion of this analysis is that, if software only allows for ordinary least squares estimation (OLS), then average referencing should be preferred, although these estimates will still be sub-optimal.
