Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising intervention for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Effects on cognitive functioning are unclear since they have been studied in small samples. We aim to estimate the impact of DBS on cognitive functioning in TRD with a systematic review and meta-analyses.

Accordingly, we developed a method for the simultaneous extraction, separate clean-up and analysis of 21 free amino acids and 10 free nucleotides by reversed phase and mixed-mode HPLC respectively. Of multiple mouth emulating solvents, extracting in Milli-Q at 35 °C was found most suitable.

In 2015, an international randomised trial demonstrated that perioperative bridging caused more harm than benefit in most anticoagulated patients with atrial fibrillation, leading to a more restrictive Dutch national guideline in April 2016. The objective of the present study was to analyse the integration of the 2016 Dutch guideline for perioperative antithrombotic management from after publication until update of hospital protocols.

Aims: Predefined endpoint analysis of the Octavia study that randomized patients who compliantly used ECS up to one year after DVT to continue or discontinue ECS treatment.
Background: The aim of this article was to evaluate the cognitive status of remitted patients with bipolar disorder (BD) using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Frontal Assessment Battery, and Brief Assessment of Cognition in Affective Disorders (BAC-A). The BAC-A is a comprehensive test battery addressing the cognitive domains compromised in BD. We also aimed to analyze potential clinical and immune predictors of cognitive performance in BD.

Elastic compression stocking therapy may prevent PTS if worn on a daily basis, but stockings are cumbersome to apply and uncomfortable to wear. Hence, identification of predictors of PTS may help physicians to select patients at high risk of PTS.

The right distal limb of 10 donkey foals, born in the spring of 2012, underwent radiographs every month for the first 6 months of age and every 3 months during the following 18 months. Latero-medial radiographs with and without barium marker at the coronary band and dorso-palmar radiographs with both front feet in weight bearing were obtained.

Design: Multicentre single blind non-inferiority randomised controlled trial.
Setting: Outpatient clinics in eight teaching hospitals in the Netherlands, including one university medical centre.
Introduction: The Wells rule is the recommended first step in the work-up of suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT). However, it is often incorrectly used leading to an excessive number of diagnostic tests used in daily practice and diagnostic failures. A simpler objective risk stratification tool may improve adherence to the guidelines.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFAccurate diagnostic assessment of suspected ipsilateral recurrent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a major clinical challenge because differentiating between acute recurrent thrombosis and residual thrombosis is difficult with compression ultrasonography (CUS). We evaluated noninvasive magnetic resonance direct thrombus imaging (MRDTI) in a prospective study of 39 patients with symptomatic recurrent ipsilateral DVT (incompressibility of a different proximal venous segment than at the prior DVT) and 42 asymptomatic patients with at least 6-month-old chronic residual thrombi and normal D-dimer levels. All patients were subjected to MRDTI.

Using confocal microscopy, we showed that one-third of fluorescently labeled mRNA containing lipoplexes are colocalized with late endosomes. We further investigated the effect of inhibitors, blocking phagocytosis, macropinocytosis, and clathrin- and caveolae-mediated endocytosis, on both the internalization of the lipoplexes by DCs and the transfection efficiency.

The diagnostic management of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a clinical dilemma. Clinical decision rules are well validated in patients with a first episode of clinically suspected VTE but are not validated in patients with a suspected recurrent event. D-dimer testing could safely exclude a recurrent VTE but is subject to several limitations.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: D-dimer testing to rule out deep vein thrombosis is less useful in older patients because of a lower specificity. An age-adjusted D-dimer cut-off value increased the proportion of older patients (>50 years) in whom pulmonary embolism could be excluded. We retrospectively validated the efficacy of this cut-off combined with clinical probability for the exclusion of deep vein thrombosis.

Regional geochemical data of heavy metals are commonly used for environmental risk assessment and management. Often these data are based on so-called total concentrations, whereas the exposure to the mobile or reactive fraction of these elements finally determines whether the exposed ecosystem is at risk and to which extent. The objective of our research was to develop a wider applicable method for quantitative hazard assessment of soil metal contamination attributable to the activity of man, based on and illustrated with data from the Netherlands.

Research has shown that there are persistent differences in health between people with a high socio-economic status (SES) compared with people with a low SES. There are also indications for a widening health gap.

Odour nuisance from agricultural activities is increasing in densely populated countries like the Netherlands. To develop adequate regulations, a large-scale, government-financed monitoring programme was started in the mid-1990s to establish odour emission levels for both conventional and low ammonia emission housing systems for cattle, pigs and poultry. The results indicate that high- and low-odour emission housing are difficult to distinguish because of the large variation within housing systems.

Odour from agricultural activities, such as the spreading of manure and the housing of animals, is increasingly being considered a nuisance in densely populated countries like the Netherlands. The objective of this research was to study the odour removal from pig house exhaust air by a biotrickling filter that had been implemented for ammonia abatement. At a regular pig production farm, the performance of a running full-scale biotrickling filter was studied for 72 days.

Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 878 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), varying in disease duration from 0 to more than 15 years. To determine the impact of SES on the health outcomes and health care use, patients were compared within and between 3 disease duration groups.

During the past three decades environmental monitoring systems covering an immense variety of environmental problems emerged rapidly throughout the world. In The Netherlands the entire spectrum of monitoring systems is present. Their development is especially interesting because of the Dutch complex environmental landscape: a result of the combination of a natural setting with a high small-scale variation and an intense use of the available space by both industry and agriculture.
