Vitamin D deficiency has a high worldwide prevalence, but actions to improve this public health problem are challenged by the heterogeneity of nutritional and clinical vitamin D guidelines, with respect to the diagnosis and treatment of vitamin D deficiency. We aimed to address this issue by providing respective recommendations for adults, developed by a European expert panel, using the Delphi method to reach consensus. Increasing the awareness of vitamin D deficiency and efforts to harmonize vitamin D guidelines should be pursued.

To investigate the possible relationship of leptin to bone mineral density (BMD) in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), we screened 168 Belarusian men aged 45-65 years. Plasma total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations were assessed, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were calculated. Hemoglobin A(1c), immune-reactive insulin (IRI), serum total testosterone, and sex hormone-binding globulin were also evaluated.

Background: Although many reports have elucidated pathophysiological characteristics of abnormal bone metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DT2), determinants of bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with DT2 are still controversial.

Methods: We examined 168 Belarussian men 45-60 years of age. Plasma total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, hemoglobin A(1c) (HbA(1c)), immunoreactive insulin, and C-reactive protein concentrations were assessed.

Context: An increase in the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies (ATAs) was reported 6-8 yr after the Chernobyl accident in radiation-exposed children and adolescents.

Objective: Our objective was to reassess the effects of childhood radiation exposure on ATAs and thyroid function 13-15 yr after the accident.

Design And Setting: We measured the antithyroglobulin (TgAbs) and antithyroperoxidase (TPOAbs) antibodies and TSH in 1433 sera collected between 1999 and 2001 from 13- to 17-yr-old adolescents born between January 1982 and October 1986 in paired contaminated and noncontaminated villages of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia.

In 14 thyrotoxic patients and 5 persons with endemic euthyroid goiter the blood plasma prolactin content was studied under the action of an acute oral load of levodopa in a dose of 0.5 g. It was found that the basal prolactin level was significantly higher in the blood of patients of both sexes with thyrotoxicosis and endemic euthyroid goiter than that in the control group (10 healthy humans).

The blood calcitonin and calcium content was studied in 38 patients with thyrotoxicosis, 20 subjects with endemic euthyroid goiter and 7 persons with primary hypothyrosis. The blood calcium and calcitorim levels were not changed in males and females with endemic euthyroid goiter in comparison with those of 19 healthy controls. Calcitonin content was markedly decreased in patients with hypothyrosis.
