This study announces the sequence of a multidrug-resistant MAHK_SCM_BAU_30A strain isolated from bovine subclinical mastitis milk in 2022 in Bangladesh. Our assembled genome had a length of 4,884,948 bp, three plasmids, two CRISPR arrays, five prophages, 51 predicted antibiotic resistance, and 72 predicted virulence factor genes.

Article Synopsis
  • Diarrhea and acute respiratory infection (ARI) are leading causes of child mortality, prompting a study in rural northern Bangladesh to identify associated risk factors for children under 2 years old.
  • The study, part of the Rang-Din Nutrition Study, followed 4011 pregnant women and their children, gathering data on health, socioeconomic status, and maternal characteristics at multiple time points.
  • Findings revealed that maternal depression and food insecurity were significant risk factors for both diarrhea and ARI in children, along with factors like family type, sanitation conditions, and the child's physical health after birth.

Background: Nutritional interventions may affect child morbidity.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine whether providing lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNSs) to pregnant and lactating women or LNS or micronutrient powder (MNP) to their infants influences child morbidity.

Methods: In a 4-arm cluster-randomized effectiveness trial, participants enrolled at ≤20 weeks of gestation (n = 4011) received: 1) maternal LNSs until 6 mo postpartum and child LNSs from 6-24 mo of age (LNS-LNS); 2) iron and folic acid (IFA) until 3 mo postpartum and child LNSs at 6-24 mo (IFA-LNS); 3) IFA (as above) and child MNP at 6-24 mo (IFA-MNP); or 4) IFA and no child supplement (IFA-Control).

Article Synopsis
  • Prenatal lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS) were studied to see if they improve newborn physical condition and feeding behaviors compared to iron and folic acid (IFA) supplements.
  • A trial involved 4,011 pregnant women, with data collected on maternal factors and newborn conditions shortly after birth.
  • The findings showed no significant differences in newborn outcomes or breastfeeding behaviors between those receiving LNS and those receiving IFA, but perceived health of the newborn did influence early breastfeeding practices.

Pregnancy and childbirth complications and cesarean delivery are common in Bangladesh. We evaluated the effect of lipid-based nutrient supplements for pregnant and lactating women (LNS-PL) on pregnancy and childbirth complications and cesarean delivery. We conducted the Rang-Din Nutrition Study, a cluster-randomized controlled effectiveness trial within a community health program in rural Bangladesh.

Maternal iodine deficiency during pregnancy and lactation is common in Bangladesh. We evaluated the effect of lipid-based nutrient supplements for pregnant and lactating women (LNS-PL) on urinary iodine concentration (UIC). We conducted a cluster-randomized controlled effectiveness trial in which we enrolled 4011 pregnant women at ≤20 gestational weeks.
