Serum samples from persons who lived in areas where onchocerciasis occurred or who had filariasis were examined with the complement fixation test and the indirect hemagglutination test for the presence of antibodies against crude extracts from Dirofilaria immitis, Onchocerca volvulus, Dipetalonema viteae, and Ascaris suum. The results could be interpreted as follows: 1. The indirect hemagglutination test was more sensitive than the complement fixation test for the demonstration of antibodies in sera from European and indigenous inhabitants of endemic areas.

Tests for serum antibodies against two amoeba antigens were performed on serum samples from 70 patients with amoebic liver abscesses, 204 travellers returning from tropical countries and 136 inhabitants of an endemic region without evidence of amoebiasis. Suspicious or borderline results in the complement-fixation, indirect haemagglutination, latex-agglutination, and double-gel diffusion tests occurred in 73.3%-90.

Periarticular and peritendinous tissue was investigated in cases of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome for the appearance of amyloid deposits. In rheumatoid arthritis no amyloid was present. In 7.

The bio-compatibility of different plastic materials were examined after their implantation in the back-muscle of 6-months-old male rabbits. Twelve weeks after the implantation chemical measurements (DNS-concentration of the tissue) and histological investigations of the surrounding tissue demonstrated for polyethylene the best bio-compatibility.

Homologous and heterologous malaria pathogens were used as antigens for the determination of malaria antibodies by indirect immunofluorescence. Homologous antibodies fell in the second half year, after successful treatment, down to the limit of demonstrability. In inhabitants of endemic malarial areas, who lived in the German Federal Republic, signs of a fall in antibodies could be observed after about 30 months.

Increased tourism into tropical countries and the use of German labor forces in such countries make it necessary for doctors to advise emigrants properly. Besides vaccinations and drug prophylaxis, a rational way of life is extraordinarily important in the tropics, skin care, cleanliness, hygienic living, suitable clothing and sports activity are important factors to which attention must be paid. Additional salt is necessary if sweating is profuse.

The problem by the amoebiasis is to differenciate the symptoms against the other similar diseases of the gastro-intestinal tract, also in cases of amoebic-abscesses in liver, lungs, brain and other organs. The presence of zystes and minutaforms of E. histolytica in the stool is not to identify with amoebic-dysenterie.

Skeletal muscle regeneration was studied in polymyopathic hamsters of the strain BIO 8262 by autoradiography. Flash labeling with 3H-thymidine revealed high labeling indices of mononuclear cells in areas with muscle cell necroses and low labeling of "interstitial cells". However, no labeled nuclei were present in myotubes.

Morphological studies were performed on Wistar-AF/Han-EMD-SPF-rats with adjuvant disease of 3 tp 14 months duration. Synovitis was observed in the noninjected paw up to the 6th month. While in the central bones resorption and new bone formation had ceased about the 7th month, periostal bone resorption proceeded until the 14the month.

The liver function tests and the electrophoretic pattern of serum protein in a series of 11 patients admitted to Bernhard Nocht Institut with hepatic amoebiasis were reviewed. A constant pattern of hypoalbuminaemia and elevated alpha2 globulins were demonstrated in all patients. LDH enzyme levels were raised in all cases admitted with amoebic liver abscess.

Histometric, biochemical, radiochemical and autoradiographic studies were undertaken to investigate the influence of complete Freund-adjuvant (CFA) on a defined chronic proliferating inflammation of a granuloma model in two different experimental situations. Where as the percentage fraction of the fibroblasts, 3H-thymidine marking index of the fibroblasts and the impulse rate of the fibroblasts and endothelial cells do not differ from the values found for the control animals, both the protein and DNA content of the implanted sponges, as well as the DNA content of the individual fibroblasts in the implants increased, independent of the stage of the chronic proliferating inflammation at which the CFA was administered. Surprisingly the quantity of the fibroblast specific synthetic product, collagen, did not increase in proportion to the absolute number of fibroblasts, but remained either constant or even significantly decreased.

The accuracy, size, localization and course of liver scans of solitary or multiple amoebic liver abscesses was evaluated in 52 patients. The scintigraphic data were correlated with the clinical symptoms. In 47 of the 52 patients it was possible to demonstrate the liver abscess on the scintigram; the right lobe of the liver was involved more frequently than would have been expected simply on the basis of its volume.

The development of articular and osseous lesions in AF/Han-EMD-SPF breed rats with adjuvant disease was studied by morphological methods. At the noninjected side arthritic lesions with eventual progressive joint destruction appeared about the tenth day after adjuvant injection. Nearly simultaneously an incipient tumorous osteomyelitis in the bones both of injected and non-injected side was observed.

Cytophotometric investigations were performed on synovial fluid mononuclear round cells in patients with various joint diseases. In nearly all instances only round cells with a diploid DNA-content were found. No increased proliferation could be observed neither in patients with rheumatoid arthritis nor in patients with a high relative number of neutrophilic granulocytes in the synovial fluid.
