Background: Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is the most common cause of antenatal hydronephrosis. Although majority of them improve with time, none of the existing diagnostic modalities can accurately predict which hydronephrotic kidney is at the risk of progressive renal damage and will benefit from early surgery. Postural variations in the anteroposterior pelvic diameter (APPD) of the hydronephrotic kidney in children during follow-up postnatal ultrasonography (USG) reflect the intrapelvic tension, which might help in predicting the need of surgery amongst these patients.

While the contribution of climate change towards intensifying urban flood risks is well acknowledged, the role of urbanization is less known. The present study, for the first time in flood management literature, explores whether and how unplanned-cum-urbanization may overshadow the contribution of extreme rainfall to flood impacts in densely populated urban regions. To establish this hypothesis and exemplify our proposed framework, the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi in India, infamous for its concurrent flood episodes is selected.

Quantifying flood risks through a cascade of hydraulic-cum-hydrodynamic modelling is data-intensive and computationally demanding- a major constraint for economically struggling and data-scarce low and middle-income nations. Under such circumstances, geomorphic flood descriptors (GFDs), that encompass the hidden characteristics of flood propensity may assist in developing a nuanced understanding of flood risk management. In line with this, the present study proposes a novel framework for estimating flood hazard and population exposure by leveraging GFDs and Machine Learning (ML) models over severely flood-prone Ganga basin.
