Article Synopsis
  • Acute otitis externa, or "Swimmers ear," is a painful condition affecting all age groups, characterized by ear pain, discharge, and hearing loss, often lacking clear treatment guidelines, particularly concerning antibiotic use.
  • A study evaluated the effectiveness of oral antibiotics in 80 patients, dividing them into two groups: one receiving systemic antibiotics and the other not, with outcomes measured through ear examination and pain scale.
  • Results showed that while antibiotics improved symptoms in severe cases, they were not significantly beneficial in mild to moderate cases, suggesting cautious use of antibiotics amid growing resistance and promoting non-antibiotic treatment options for less severe cases.
