Background: There are conflicting results in the existing studies regarding the association between depression and subclinical hypothyroidism in adolescents. Subclinical hypothyroidism is defined as elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels above the reference range without signs or symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Objectives: The focus of this study is to determine whether there is any association between depression and subclinical hypothyroidism, (as defined by the serum TSH levels) in a population of healthy adolescents.

Multiple epidemiological studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent amongst adolescents in the USA. However, recommendations regarding the treatment of vitamin D deficiency in healthy adolescents are not well defined. We carried out a prospective pilot study, to determine whether treatment with 2000 international units of vitamin D3 daily for 3 months, would normalize the vitamin D levels in vitamin D deficient adolescents.

Acute intravascular hemolysis (AIH) with hemoglobinuria is a rare complication of dengue viral infection. Review of the literature revealed only one report of AIH as a complication of dengue fever (DF). We report a case of AIH with massive hemoglobinuria in a 17-year-old Sri Lankan male, in the febrile phase of DF.

A prospective, randomized, double-blind study was conducted to determine whether there was any benefit to the addition of ipratropium to a single nebulized albuterol treatment in infants and children with mild to moderate acute asthma presenting to a pediatric office. There were no significant differences between the albuterol group and the combined albuterol-ipratropium group in the relief of the respiratory distress, disposition of the patients from the office, or in the incidence of relapse. The addition of ipratropium to nebulized albuterol is of no added benefit in the treatment of infants and children with mild-to-moderate acute asthma presenting to a pediatric office.
