This research aimed to study the protective effects of EBN against Cd-induced uterine toxicity in Sprague Dawley rats.

Dhaka landfill waste practices: addressing urban pollution and health hazards.

Two Dhaka, Bangladesh, landfills are explored to understand how management practices impact environmental quality and public health in the surrounding areas. A combination of research methods is used, such as geospatial buffer zone analysis, semi-structured observation checklist and qualitative interviews, to gain an understanding of the waste transportation, leachate percolation, and adverse health and environmental effects. A multi-ring buffer zone and ground truth method were applied through ArcMap for the spatial distribution of landfill-adjacent environmental features.

Gelatin-based instant gel-forming volatile spray for wound-dressing application.

This study was a successful endeavor to develop and investigate the suitability of a bioadhesive wound-healing gel based on gelatin for first-aid purposes. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used to prepare a denser phase of gelatin chains, and diethyl ether (DEE) was used to introduce high volatility to the solution. The prepared solution was stable in the storage container but rapidly formed (within 3 s) a protective and bioadhesive gel around the wound surface by being sprayed over the wound.

An assessment of child protection in Bangladesh: How effective is NGO-led Child-Friendly Space?

Many underprivileged Bangladeshi children are vulnerable to child trafficking, abuse, and exploitation. Child-Friendly Space (CFS) is a semi-permanent house space where vulnerable children are given the support to have a safe environment to survive and thrive. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of CFS in providing a protective environment for the children in Bangladesh.

Outbreak of Sudden Death with Acute Encephalitis Syndrome Among Children Associated with Exposure to Lychee Orchards in Northern Bangladesh, 2012.

Recurrent outbreaks of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) among children in lychee growing areas in Asia highlight the need to better understand the etiology and the context. We conducted a mixed-methods study to identify risk factors for disease, and behaviors and practices around lychee cultivation in an AES outbreak community in northern Bangladesh in 2012. The outbreak affected 14 children; 13 died.

Methods: A comprehensive survey of all the nephrologists staffing all hemodialysis centers in France during April 2013 included 266 of 269 (99%) centers, treating 27,798 patients with arteriovenous fistula or graft.

In 2012, Sierra Leone experienced its worst cholera outbreak in over 15 years affecting 12 of the country's 13 districts. With limited diagnostic capability, particularly in bacterial culture, the cholera outbreak was initially confirmed by microbiological testing of clinical specimens outside of Sierra Leone. During 2012 - 2013, in direct response to the lack of diagnostic microbiology facilities, and to assist in investigating and monitoring the cholera outbreak, diagnostic and reference services were established in Sierra Leone at the Central Public Health Reference Laboratory focusing specifically on isolating and identifying Vibrio cholerae and other enteric bacterial pathogens.

Infrastructure and contamination of the physical environment in three Bangladeshi hospitals: putting infection control into context.

Objective: This paper describes the physical structure and environmental contamination in selected hospital wards in three government hospitals in Bangladesh.

Methods: The qualitative research team conducted 48 hours of observation in six wards from three Bangladeshi tertiary hospitals in 2007. They recorded environmental contamination with body secretions and excretions and medical waste and observed ward occupant handwashing and use of personal protective equipment.

The radium was pre-concentrated on MnO(2) and the radium purified via ion exchange and, after a 2-day period of incubation to allow for secular equilibrium between the parent-daughter (228)Ra((228)Ac), the daughter nuclide (228)Ac was isolated by ion exchange according to the method of Nour et al. [2004.
