The Positive Effect of Psychotherapy in the Treatment of an Erosive Oral and Dermal Lichen Planus Case.

Lichen planus (LP) is an autoimmune disease that may affect the oral cavity and the skin, and it has the potential to change to malignancy. In this paper we report a LP case in a 42-year-old male patient in which anxiety and depression were apparently the only possible risk factors of LP. Due to this apparent comorbidity and the risk of not responding well to conventional medication (topical and systemic corticosteroids) or the risk of relapse in the case of ongoing stress, we decided to integrate psychotherapy (without psychotropic drugs) as an adjunct into the management strategy.

Health and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life and the Associated Factors in Diabetic Patients.

Background: Diabetes mellitus, a chronic multi-systemic disease affecting various organs, may negatively influence health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). This study aimed to investigate this association in a cross-sectional sample of Iraqi Kurdish diabetic patients.

Methods: Two hundred eighty-five type 2 diabetic patients participated in the survey.

Periodontitis is the inflammation of the supporting structures around the dentition. Several microbial agents, mostly bacteria, have been identified as causative factors for periodontal disease. On the other hand, oral cavity is a rich reservoir for viruses since it contains a wide variety of cell types that can be targeted by viruses.

Dermatomyositis is a multi-system, connective tissue immune-mediated inflammatory condition characterised by myositis and distinct skin manifestations, with a higher prevalence in women. Symptoms typically appear in adulthood, though a juvenile form exists. Early signs may include Gottron's papules and heliotrope rash, with proximal muscle weakness as the second most common initial symptom.

A Family Report of Hereditary Gingival Fibromatosis.

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare hereditary condition characterized by abnormal enlargement of the gingival tissue with a variable clinical manifestation. Typically, the hyperplastic gingiva is normal in color and consistency, and the tendency of bleeding is minimal. The swelling may be limited to a particular location or generalized over the whole gingiva.

Prevalence and Severity of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Diabetic and Hypertensive Patients: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study.

Background The ability to perceive sound is crucial for effective communication and environmental awareness. This study aimed to assess sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in patients with both diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HTN). Materials and methods A total of 120 participants of both genders were divided into three groups: Group I consisted of diabetic patients (n=40, 22 males and 18 females), Group II included hypertensive individuals (n=40, 16 males and 24 females), and Group III served as controls (n=40, 15 males and 25 females).

Lack of pulmonary involvement leads to a 3 years delay of diagnosis in a childhood sarcoidosis case with arthritis, ocular symptoms, and bilateral parotid swelling.

Key Clinical Message: This paper presents a rare sarcoidosis case in a child of 12 years of age presented with arthritis, bilateral parotid enlargement and ocular, but unfortunately the diagnosis has been missed due to lack of pulmonary involvement.

Abstract: Diagnosis of sarcoidosis is by exclusion, and sometimes, it can be challenging. This paper presents a rare sarcoidosis case in a child of 12 years of age presented with bilateral parotid enlargement.

Implication of serum and salivary albumin tests in the recent oral health related epidemiological studies: A narrative review.

Albumin is the most abundant protein in human serum and a specific amount of albumin also can be found in the saliva. It has several physiological functions such as blood colloidal osmotic pressure, antioxidant activity, binding and transporting of endogenous and exogenous substrates. We conducted an electronic search across several databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase and Science Direct using the relevant MeSH terms and keywords like "albumin", "serum albumin", "salivary albumin", "oral health" "dental caries" and "epidemiology".

Psychotherapy training in postgraduate psychiatry training in Nigeria - Are we doing enough?

Introduction: Nigeria, with an estimated 40 million people living with mental disorders, faces a critical shortage of psychiatrists to address the significant burden. Despite psychotherapy being integral to psychiatric training, it lacks structure, consistency and adequate supervision. This is alarming, particularly given the substantial demand for specialized psychotherapeutic support among those with mental illness.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey covering Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, using a 61-item online questionnaire assessing short-term mobility, long-term migration experiences and migration attitudes.

Background: Tobacco Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable morbidity and mortality in the world. It is well documented that tobacco smoking is risk factor for many diseases like: cancers, chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and the effects of tobacco smoking on hematological indices gets a little attention: the data is mostly inconsistent regarding the differential of WBCs, a conflicting studies described the effect of smoking on hemoglobin descriptive parameters and a regular monitoring of platelets count in smokers was advised.

One of the major causes of blindness in human beings is the diabetic retinopathy (DR). To prevent blindness, early detection of DR is therefore necessary. In this paper, a hybrid model is proposed for diagnosing DR from fundus images.

Association between Malnutrition and Dental Caries in Iraqi Kurdish Children.

Background: This paper aimed to study the association of serum Vitamin D level and Body Mass Index (BMI) as representatives of malnutrition at micro and macro levels, respectively, on dental caries.

Method And Participants: A total of 333 randomly selected children aged 6-12 years in Sulaimani, Kurdistan, Iraq were examined for three variables of the Decayed Missed Filled Tooth (DMFT) index, BMI, and Vitamin D serum levels in a single-time cross-sectional snapshot.

Results: The majority of the population studied (70%) were Vitamin D deficient.

Early defenses against respiratory infections rely heavily on mucosal immunity, especially secretory sIgA, which has several features and functions that make it suitable for mucosal defense.

Spinal cord injury is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among young adults in many countries including the United States. Difficulty in the regeneration of neurons is one of the main obstacles that leave spinal cord injury patients with permanent paralysis in most instances. Recent research has found that preventing acute and subacute secondary cellular damages to the neurons and supporting glial cells can help slow the progression of spinal cord injury pathogenesis, in part by reactivating endogenous regenerative proteins including Noggin that are normally present during spinal cord development.
