Key performance indicators for monitoring of anemia management and iron status in children attending a pediatric dialysis unit: the experience of Ain Shams University.

Background: Anemia in children on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) leads to poor quality of life. Our study aimed to assess and monitor anemia and iron status management in children on maintenance HD over 18 months using key performance indicators.

Methods: Key performance indicators, formulated as the percentage of patients achieving the KDIGO (2012) guideline-recommended targets for hemoglobin (Hb) (11-12 g/dl), transferrin saturation (TSAT) (20-40%) and serum ferritin (200-500 ng/ml), were reported quarterly over the 18-month-period of this study.

Screening for polyomavirus nephropathy and viremia in children with renal transplantation.

Background: Polyomavirus, known as BK virus, is an important cause of allograft dysfunction in renal transplant patients, leading to BK virus nephropathy. The main study objectives were to assess the disease incidence and disease course in pediatric patients, and assess the diagnostic accuracy of BK screening for asymptomatic patients.

Methods: This is a single-center observational study, which included 81 pediatric renal allograft recipients that were transplanted and/or followed at King Fahad Specialist Hospital-Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

Comparison of functional outcome of cemented total hip replacement versus cemented dual-mobility cup total hip replacement for the management of displaced femoral neck fractures in the active elderly patients.

Introduction: Current guidelines recommend treating displaced femoral neck fractures with a total hip replacement in fit and active elderly patients. Dislocation remains the main complication. Dual-mobility cup (DMC) hip replacements maybe a solution to decrease dislocation, with the benefit of increasing stability, achieving better range of motion and functional outcomes.

The effect of genetic and nongenetic factors on warfarin dose variability in Qatari population.

The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of VKORC1, CYP2C9, and CYP4F2 genetic variants and their contribution to warfarin dose variability in Qataris. One hundred and fifty warfarin-treated Qatari patients on a stable dose and with a therapeutic INR for at least three consecutive clinic visits were recruited. Saliva samples were collected using Oragene DNA self-collection kit, followed by DNA purification and genotyping via TaqMan Real-Time-PCR assay.

Functional outcome and health related quality of life after dual mobility cup total hip replacement for displaced femoral neck fractures in middle aged Egyptian patients.

Aim: This study was done to assess the functional and clinical results after one year of cemented THR with dual mobility cup for the treatment of fracture neck femur in active middle-aged patients in Egypt (Middle Eastern population).
