Melanocyte development is orchestrated by a complex interconnecting regulatory network of genes and synergistic interactions. Piebaldism and Waardenburg syndrome are neurocristopathies that arise from mutations in genes involved in this complex network. Our understanding of melanocyte development, Piebaldism, and Waardenburg syndrome has improved dramatically over the past decade.

Article Synopsis
  • Acquired disorders with depigmentation, like vitiligo, are frequently seen by dermatologists and have a variety of possible diagnoses.
  • Vitiligo is marked by clear depigmented spots, but other conditions, such as chemical leukoderma, can look similar and may lead to misdiagnosis.
  • The first article in this educational series highlights the importance of distinguishing these disorders early for better treatment and outcomes.

The introduction of minimally invasive surgery in other gynecologic cancers has shown benefits with similar oncologic outcomes. However, the biology and complexity of surgery for ovarian cancer may preclude this approach for ovarian cancer patients. Our objective is to assess feasibility to achieve complete cytoreductive surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for stage IIIC-IV ovarian cancer patients via minimally invasive surgery.

Rosacea is one of the most common and misunderstood dermatologic conditions. Currently, rosacea criteria are based on expert opinion; the definition of rosacea is primarily a reflection of opinion that is prone to bias. It has been more than a decade since the initial criteria were created by the National Rosacea Society.

Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea is the most prevalent rosacea subtype. Multiple dermatologic conditions may mimic erythematotelangiectatic rosacea. The authors review a comprehensive approach to evaluating subjects with a suspected diagnosis of erythematotelangiectatic rosacea and discuss findings that may warrant further investigation.

Background: Topical corticosteroids offer great efficacy in controlling a wide variety of dermatoses. Traditional ointment vehicles are messy and difficult to apply, which might limit adherence. Alternative vehicle formulations such as topical sprays might improve adherence due to their ease of application.

BACKGROUND: Topical corticosteroids are the most common dermatologic medications and are available in numerous different vehicles. Adherence is limited by traditional vehicles because they are messy and time consuming to apply. The preferred spray formulations have the advantage of being applied with ease, resulting in improved adherence and subsequently improved psoriasis.

Article Synopsis
  • Atopic dermatitis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting 10-20% of the population, causing significant discomfort mainly due to itching (pruritus).
  • The study focuses on interleukin-31, a newly identified protein linked to pruritus in atopic dermatitis, and looks into potential treatments targeting this pathway.
  • Findings show that interleukin-31 is present on skin cells and its overproduction can lead to symptoms of atopic dermatitis and hair loss; a monoclonal antibody (CIM331) has shown promise in reducing itching in clinical trials.

Background: Psoriasis is associated with numerous comorbidities, often reported in terms of relative risk. Both doctors and the general population tend to overestimate the effects of exposures when presented in relative terms, leading to anxiety and potentially poor treatment decisions. Absolute risks might provide a better basis for risk assessment.

Background: Histopathological differentiation between BCH and HGPIN in prostatic needle biopsies is a diagnostic challenge. The gold standard for detection of HGPIN and BCH is histopathological examination; however subjectivity in interpretation and tiny volume of obtained tissue hamper reliable diagnosis.

Aims: The aim of this study was to assess usefulness of using the p63 and p504s to solve this problem.

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) may enhance diverse biologic activities in prostate cancer. This study was conducted to analyze expression levels of LPA-producing enzymes, autotaxin (ATX) and acylglycerol kinase (AGK), in prostate cancer with relevance to clinicopathological parameters. Real-time RT-PCR and western blotting were performed for ATX and AGK in non-neoplastic prostate cells (PrECs and PrSCs) and prostate cancer cell-lines (DU-145, PC-3, LNCaP, and AILNCaP).
