Daily, sewage treatment works (STWs) receive large volumes of fats, oils and greases (FOG), by-products of food preparation. To increase FOG removal at STW, conventional primary sedimentation tanks (PSTs) can be enhanced using chemical coagulant or through dissolved air flotation (DAF) techniques. This work aimed to assess the potential benefits of enhanced primary treatment for FOG removal through an energy and costs analysis.

Background: Migraine with aura is thought likely to be caused by cortical spreading depression (CSD). Tonabersat inhibits CSD, and we therefore investigated whether tonabersat has a preventive effect in migraine with aura.

Methods: In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, 40 mg tonabersat once daily was compared with matched placebo in patients who had at least one aura attack per month during the past 3 months.

The effect of ischemia induced acute renal failure (ARF) on the transport of phosphate (Pi) after early (15-30 min) and prolonged (60 min) ischemia in the brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV) from rat renal cortex was studied. Sodium-dependent transport of Pi declined significantly and progressively due to ischemia. Western blot analysis of BBM from ischemic rats showed decreased expression of NaPi-2.

Background: Ischemia results in rapid decline in mitochondrial electron transfer, resulting in decreased ATP levels, and fall in intracellular pH. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of ischemia and reperfusion on the activities of enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism in rat kidney.

Methods: Ischemia was induced by occlusion of the left renal artery for specified times.
