Introduction: Recent studies have shown an increase in the prevalence of early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) in people aged 20-49 compared to those aged 50-74, with a more rapid increase in the younger age groups. Poorly differentiated, left-sided, and rectal tumors were more common in young adults than in older adult CRC patients. We aimed to improve the understanding of early-onset CRC and to guide primary care physicians on strategies to mitigate its impact.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of mometasone furoate (MTF), a corticosteroid, in treating nasal polyps (NP) by reviewing randomized controlled trials published from January 1995 to July 2024.
  • - Researchers followed PRISMA guidelines to systematically analyze data from 834 publications, resulting in a review of 1,710 patients to assess primary outcomes like polyp size and nasal congestion, along with secondary outcomes like nasal symptoms and quality of life.
  • - The findings indicate that mometasone furoate nasal spray significantly alleviates nasal symptoms and reduces the size of nasal polyps in affected patients.

Oral tongue squamous cell cancer (OTSCC) is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide and incidence increases with age. An alarming increase in the incidence of OTSCC in the younger age group. This study aimed to explore clinical and histopathological characteristics, survival, and other post-surgical outcomes in patients with OTSCC treated with glossectomy through the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs (MNGHA) within our study period.

Understanding the relationship between aging and postoperative complications is critical because it may influence how the condition is managed. The safety of thyroidectomy in the older age group is debated in literature. All previous studies were conducted outside of the Middle East, and there is a scarcity of data in the literature describing the relationship between age and postoperative outcomes after thyroidectomy.

Maxillary ameloblastoma is one of the rarest odontogenic epithelial tumors encountered, as 80% of ameloblastomas are seen within the mandible. Ameloblastoma is usually incidentally detected in the third to fourth decades of life, as most patients remain asymptomatic; yet some patients may complain of a slowly growing, painless swelling. We present a case of maxillary ameloblastoma with pulmonary metastasis along with a brief literature review.

Article Synopsis
  • Thyroid surgery, especially total thyroidectomy, can lead to long-term complications like hypoparathyroidism, affecting patient recovery and healthcare costs.
  • A study at King Abdulaziz Medical City analyzed data from 192 thyroid cancer patients who underwent surgery between 2016 and 2022, revealing a significant link between the type of surgery and postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
  • Results indicated that factors such as postoperative hypocalcemia and treatment with IV calcium gluconate are closely associated with higher rates of hypoparathyroidism following total thyroidectomy.

Background Although serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is one of the basic investigations to assess thyroid nodules, its role in thyroid oncogenesis remains unclear. Previous literature has conflicting findings regarding TSH levels and the prediction of malignancy. This study aims to investigate the association between TSH levels and the risk of malignancy and advanced staging in patients who underwent thyroidectomy for nodular thyroid disease.

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) primarily affects the posterior canal, but up to 20% of cases can involve multiple canals, making diagnosis and treatment more complex.
  • A systematic review analyzed literature to find effective repositioning strategies for treating multiple canal BPPV, utilizing resources like PubMed and Scopus to gather relevant studies.
  • Out of 5,196 BPPV patients studied, 513 had multiple canal involvement; results showed 58.9% were symptom-free after one treatment session, but a significant portion required more sessions, indicating higher difficulty and recurrence rates in managing multiple canal BPPV compared to single canal cases.

Background: Colorectal cancer is the most common malignancy in Saudi males and third most common in females. Patients with locally advanced colon cancer may eventually develop metastatic disease if not treated promptly and according to guidelines. The recent National Comprehensive Cancer Network guideline recommends tumor resection followed by adjuvant chemotherapy for stage III and high-risk stage II tumors.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a lethal malignant disease and is considered the fourth leading cause of death among cancer patients in the United States. Mutations in the BRCA gene, which is a DNA repair gene, increase the risk of PDAC, and among all patients with PDAC, about 8%-10% have a BRCA2 mutation. The finding of gene mutations is associated with a better response to platinum-based chemotherapy.

Article Synopsis
  • This research focused on creating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from an endophytic fungus, optimizing factors like temperature, media, pH, and silver nitrate concentration for effective synthesis.
  • The AgNPs were then encapsulated with chitosan using microwave heating, and their properties were characterized using various spectroscopic techniques, confirming stability and interaction with chitosan.
  • The study demonstrated that the resulting chitosan-encapsulated AgNPs showed significant antifungal activity, particularly achieving a 93% reduction in mycelial growth against certain fungal pathogens.

Background: Resection surgery in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) patients is associated with potential complications, including surgical site infection (SSI).

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence rate of SSI, identify the common pathogens responsible for SSI, and determine potential risk factors for SSI development in a cohort from Saudi Arabia.

Materials And Methods: Patients with CRC who underwent bowel resection surgery at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, between January 01, 2016, and December 31, 2019, were retrospectively included.

Polyurethane (PU) paint with a hydrophobic surface can be easily fouled. In this study, hydrophilic silica nanoparticles and hydrophobic silane were used to modify the surface hydrophobicity that affects the fouling properties of PU paint. Blending silica nanoparticles followed by silane modification only resulted in a slight change in surface morphology and water contact angle.

Translating the updated medical guidelines into routine clinical practice is an important initiative to improve the population's health and decrease disease outcomes. A cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia, to evaluate the knowledge and degree of application (practice) of the stroke management guidelines among emergency resident physicians. An interview-based self-administered questionnaire was used to survey the emergency resident doctors in Riyadh hospitals from May 2019 to January 2020.

Introduction: Acute unilateral vestibular hypofunction is characterized by sudden onset of vertigo or dizziness, vomiting/nausea, gait instability, and nystagmus. This is commonly described as an acute vestibular syndrome and usually attributed to vestibular neuritis; however, up to 25% of acute vestibular syndrome is caused by a stroke of posterior circulations. The video head impulse test is a recent tool in the vestibular test battery that assesses the vestibule-ocular reflex by measuring the VOR gain and recording overt and covert saccades, these findings have been found to be helpful in the diagnosis of various vestibular disorders.

Introduction Immunotherapy is considered a new modality in the treatment of cancer with emerging different toxicity profiles. It is essential for healthcare practitioners to be aware of these side effects. Emergency medicine physicians are first-line health providers and should have the required knowledge and understanding of immunotherapy-related adverse effects to be able to identify and manage such patients.

We developed a computational-based model for simulating adsorption capacity of a novel layered double hydroxide (LDH) and metal organic framework (MOF) nanocomposite in separation of ions including Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. The simulated adsorbent was a composite of UiO-66-(Zr)-(COOH) MOF grown onto the surface of functionalized Ni-Co-LDH sheets. This novel adsorbent showed high surface area for adsorption capacity, and was chosen to develop the model for study of ions removal using this adsorbent.
