Pregnancy and childbirth are commonly seen as positive experiences, but they can also pose distinct challenges and risks, especially when care is insufficient. This study investigates the factors influencing maternity patient experience by exploring the complex interactions among these factors. Using data from the 2021 maternity patient survey by the National Health Services (NHS) in England, we implemented a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) to model these interactions.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study reviews 27 studies from 2012 to 2023 on the use of AI tools in managing Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), highlighting variations in research design and patient demographics across medical specialties.
  • - Most AI models were designed for hospitalized patients, particularly in surgical or intensive care settings, and simpler models with fewer predictors showed better clinical applicability than complex ones.
  • - The research emphasizes the need for more inclusive studies that cover diverse healthcare settings, particularly in developing countries, and calls for improved accuracy and usability of AI models to enhance their real-world clinical implementation.

Article Synopsis
  • Xanthomas are skin swellings caused by cholesterol and lipid accumulation, often linked to genetic lipid disorders like familial hypercholesterolemia (FH).
  • An 11-year-old girl presented with multiple painless, yellowish masses that had been growing for 4 years, with lab tests confirming high cholesterol levels, leading to a diagnosis of Homozygous FH and subsequent surgical removal of the xanthomas.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment of xanthomas are crucial as they can signal underlying hypercholesterolemia, helping to prevent severe complications.

Background: There is little international data on morbidity and mortality of surgery for perforated peptic ulcer (PPU). This study aimed to understand the global 30-day morbidity and mortality of patients undergoing surgery for PPU and to identify variables associated with these.

Method: We performed an international study of adults (≥ 18 years) who underwent surgery for PPU from 1st January 2022 to 30th June 2022.

Background: Research has increasingly become important to career progression and a compulsory component in most medical programs. While medical trainees are consistently urged to undertake research endeavors, they frequently encounter obstacles at both personal and organizational levels that impede the pursuit of high-quality research. This study aims to identify the barriers and recommend successful interventions to increase research productivity amongst medical trainees.

Background: The use of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) has become prevalent across a variety of clinical settings. Many healthcare professionals have started getting hands-on training. To evaluate the effectiveness of such training programs, this study aimed to assess a 4 day POCUS training course on healthcare providers' skills and knowledge acquisition.

Objective: This study aimed to assess 30-day morbidity and mortality rates following cholecystectomy for benign gallbladder disease and identify the factors associated with complications.

Summary Background Data: Although cholecystectomy is common for benign gallbladder disease, there is a gap in the knowledge of the current practice and variations on a global level.

Methods: A prospective, international, observational collaborative cohort study of consecutive patients undergoing cholecystectomy for benign gallbladder disease from participating hospitals in 57 countries between January 1 and June 30, 2022, was performed.

Introduction: This 10-year registry review aimed to investigate the clinical behaviour and outcomes of mixed germ cell tumours with choriocarcinoma components, a rare and aggressive subtype of testicular cancer, in Saudi Arabia. The study explores the demographic characteristics of affected patients, tumour profiles, and the mortality rate associated with this malignancy.

Methods: Utilizing data from the Saudi Cancer Registry, the authors identified 33 cases of mixed germ cell tumours with choriocarcinoma components among 1001 testicular cancer cases recorded between 2008 and 2017.

Background: Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) constitute a significant challenge harming thousands of people worldwide yearly. While various tools and methods are used to identify pressure injuries, artificial intelligence (AI) and decision support systems (DSS) can help to reduce HAPIs risks by proactively identifying patients at risk and preventing them before harming patients.

Objective: This paper comprehensively reviews AI and DSS applications for HAPIs prediction using Electronic Health Records (EHR), including a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis.

Background: Bile duct injury (BDI) is one of the serious complications of cholecystectomy procedures, which has a disastrous impact on long-term survival, health-related quality of life (QoL), healthcare costs as well as high rates of litigation. The standard treatment of major BDI is hepaticojejunostomy (HJ). Surgical outcomes depend on many factors, including the severity of the injury, the surgeons' experiences, the patient's condition, and the reconstruction time.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates three common techniques for closing the common bile duct after stone removal, focusing on T-tube drainage, primary closure, and biliary stenting.
  • The analysis included 211 patients and found that the biliary stenting group had significantly fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times compared to the other methods.
  • The authors conclude that biliary stenting is the preferred method for closing the common bile duct after exploration, as it offers better outcomes overall.

Background: Pancreatic pseudocyst (PP) is the commonest cystic lesion of the pancreas. Internal drainage of PPs can be accomplished by traditional open or recently by minimally invasive laparoscopic or endoscopic approaches. We aimed to evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes after endoscopic, laparoscopic, and open drainage.

Background: Endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) is the standard technique for common bile duct (CBD) stone removal. Recently, endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation (EPLBD) has been shown to be a safe and effective technique for the removal of large CBD stone. The aim of this study was to determine the therapeutic outcomes and safety of EPLBD compared with ES for large CBD stone extraction.

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the standard treatment for symptomatic gallbladder disease. Single-incision laparoscopic surgery was developed with the aim of decreasing the invasiveness of conventional laparoscopy. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcome of single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy with 3-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Aim: Gastrointestinal helminthosis is a global problem in small ruminant production. Most parasites have developed resistance to commonly available anthelminthic compounds, and there is currently an increasing need for new compounds with more efficacies. This study evaluated the in vitro effects of ethanolic extract of Curcuma longa (EECL) as a biological nematicide against third stage Haemonchus larvae (L3) isolated from sheep.

The prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes and total worm burden of Damara and Barbados Blackbelly cross sheep was investigated among smallholder farms in Salak Tinggi district of Selangor, Malaysia. A total of 50 sheep raised in smallholder farms comprising of 27 Damara cross and 23 Barbados Blackbelly cross were categorized based on their age into young and adults. Fecal samples were collected and examined for strongyle egg count by using modified McMaster technique.
