The placenta plays a critical role in nutrient and oxygen exchange during pregnancy, yet the effects of medicinal drugs on this selective barrier remain poorly understood. To overcome this, this study presents a cost-effective bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) system to assess tight junction integrity and monolayer formation in BeWo b30 cells, a widely used model of the multinucleated maternal-fetal exchange surface of the placental barrier. Mechanical recycling is the most efficient way to reduce plastic pollution due to its ability to maintain the intrinsic properties of plastics as well as provide economic benefits involved in other types of recycling. On the other hand, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations provide key insights into structural deformation, lamellar crystalline axis (c-axis) orientations, and reorganization, which are essential for understanding plastic behavior during structural deformations. To simulate the influence of structural deformations in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) during mechanical recycling while paying attention to obtaining an alternate lamellar orientation, the authors examine a specific way of preparing stacked lamella-oriented HDPE united atom (UA) models, starting from a single 1000 UA (C) chain of crystalline conformations and then packing such chain conformations into 2-chain, 10-chain, 15-chain, and 20-chain semi-crystalline models.

Degradation in the mechanical properties of recycled polymer materials has been recently appearing as a big issue in polymer science. The molecular mechanism of the degradation is considered in part due to residual memories of flow experienced during molding processes, and therefore the mechanical recycling through remolding involving melting and recrystallization has been attempted in recent years. A fluorescent naphthalimide conjugate of calix[4]arene ( ) has been synthesized and characterized. The selective and efficient detection of trinitrophenol (TNP) by among nine other different nitroaromatic compounds was demonstrated using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The minimum detection limit is 29 nM, which is the lowest reported so far by any conjugate of calixarene toward TNP.

Perampanel is an adjunctive treatment for epilepsy that works through the direct inhibition of AMPA receptors. The same molecular mechanism has recently been shown for a fatty acid, decanoic acid, prescribed in the medium chain triglyceride ketogenic diet for the treatment of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. Because each compound has been proposed to act through a distinct AMPA receptor binding site, we predicted that perampanel and decanoic acid would act synergistically against AMPA receptors and, consequently, seizures.
