Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness of metformin as a primary treatment for type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents compared to other therapies, finding notable benefits in glycemic control and fasting plasma glucose levels.
  • Of the 1,825 studies reviewed, three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included, two of which showed significant reductions in HbA1c and higher rates of achieving good glycemic control among metformin users at 24 weeks.
  • While metformin showed improvements in LDL cholesterol levels and body mass index (BMI), adverse events were more common in its group, although not statistically significant, indicating a need for cautious interpretation of the findings.
