Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the transformation of cancer cells in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) from an epithelial to a mesenchymal state, which enhances their mobility and ability to spread.
  • Researchers focused on the expression of specific macrophage antigens, CD68 and CD163, in both cancer cells and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs).
  • Findings revealed that these antigens were present not only in TAMs but also in many OSCC epithelial cells, suggesting a possible link between macrophage characteristics and increased cancer metastasis.

This comprehensive review articulates critical insights into the nexus of environmental stressors and their health impacts across diverse species, underscoring significant findings that reveal profound effects on both wildlife and human health systems. Central to our examination is the role of pollutants, climate variables, and pathogens in contributing to complex disease dynamics and physiological disruptions, with particular emphasis on immune and endocrine functions. This research brings to light emerging evidence on the severe implications of environmental pressures on a variety of taxa, including predatory mammals, raptorial birds, seabirds, fish, and humans, which are pivotal as indicators of broader ecosystem health and stability.

Background The overuse of medical testing, be it ancillary testing or imaging, has been identified as a problem in all healthcare systems in the world. As the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia marches towards the 2030 vision of healthcare transformation, we have sought to get a perspective on medically unnecessary tests being conducted in Saudi Arabian emergency departments (EDs), the reasons behind this phenomenon, and possible solutions to it. Methods This is a cross-sectional survey among emergency medicine physicians (EMPs) working in Saudi Arabian EDs, taken through a self-filled online questionnaire, about their ordering habits, what they believe to be unnecessary testing in their practice, the practice of their colleagues, and other Saudi EMPs as a whole.
