Introduction: An interesting type of fractional derivatives that has received widespread attention in recent years is the tempered fractional derivatives. These fractional derivatives are a generalization of the well-known fractional derivatives, such as Caputo and Riemann-Liouville. In fact, these derivatives are obtained by multiplying the expressed fractional derivatives by an exponential factor.

Purpose: Our study investigated the association between dental caries, periodontal diseases, and tooth loss with diabetes mellitus (DM) among the elderly population, representing the first study of its kind in Iran.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional community-based study as a part of the second wave of the Birjand longitudinal aging study (BLAS, 2021-2022) for people older than 60. We used the Comprehensive Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Tool (CGOHAT) for the oral health evaluation.

Article Synopsis
  • Dental caries among the elderly in Iran is a major health issue, prompting a meta-analysis to assess its prevalence and impact on this population.
  • The study included 46 data points from over 10,400 individuals aged 65 and older, revealing a high mean DMFT (decayed, missing, and filled teeth) score of 26.84, indicating poor oral health.
  • Findings suggest that elderly Iranians typically have only about 5 sound teeth, highlighting the need for improved oral health policies targeting this demographic.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral disorders remain a significant global public health issue, and researchers aim to create a new quality of care index (QCI) to measure treatment effectiveness on a population level.
  • Using data from the Global Burden of Disease study, the team applied principal component analysis to generate the QCI, which showed an upward trend from 70.5 in 1990 to 74.6 in 2017 without significant gender disparities.
  • The highest QCI was found in high-middle SDI countries, while areas like Nicaragua and Sierra Leone had the lowest scores, indicating that improvements in oral care quality have occurred, yet disparities remain across different regions.

Backgrounds: Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) is the most common congenital craniofacial anomaly, including non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate and cleft palate only. Failure in the fusion of median and lateral nasal processes, the maxillary prominence, and soft tissues around the oral cavity can cause CL/P. Previously, the prevalence has been estimated to be 1 among every 1000 births in 2014 among American neonates and no other reports have been available since.

Objectives: Improving the oral health of the elderly is crucial to improving their general health and quality of life. To reach this goal, it is necessary to start with a comprehensive oral health assessment and a detailed treatment plan. The aim of this study was, therefore, to develop a comprehensive Oral Health Assessment Tool for the geriatric population.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the trend of dental caries in Iran from 1990 to 2017, focusing on the decayed-missing-filled teeth index (DMFT) across different age groups.
  • Results showed a significant increase in the mean DMFT by 58% during this period, with notable rises in decayed and missing teeth, especially among young adults and seniors.
  • The findings highlight a growing dental health issue in Iran, urging policymakers to implement nationwide strategies, such as managing sugar consumption, to address and improve oral health outcomes.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the natural history of selective intrauterine growth restriction in monochorionic twin pregnancies based on the Gratacós classification, including progression of, improvement in, or stability of umbilical artery Dopplers and progression to twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome or twin anemia polycythemia syndrome. We also aimed to investigate risk factors for smaller twin demise.

Data Sources: A systematic search was performed to identify relevant studies published in English up to June 2022 using the databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science STUDY ELIGIBILITY: We used retrospective and prospective studies published in English that reported on selective intrauterine growth restriction without concomitant twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

Article Synopsis
  • Dental caries is a significant health issue among children globally, and the study aims to analyze trends in deciduous (baby) teeth caries in Iran from 1990 to 2017 to inform effective interventions.
  • The research examined national oral health surveys and utilized statistical models to assess increases in dental caries, revealing that 22% of children had caries in 1990, which rose to over 15% by 2017, predominantly due to untreated decay.
  • The findings indicate an urgent need for improved oral health policies and interventions in Iran, including strategies like supervised tooth brushing and better dietary practices to combat rising dental caries rates among children.

Introduction: Recently, a new family of fractional derivatives called the piecewise fractional derivatives has been introduced, arguing that for some problems, each of the classical fractional derivatives may not be able to provide an accurate statement of the consideration problem alone. In defining this kind of derivatives, several types of fractional derivatives can be used simultaneously.

Objectives: This study introduces a new kind of piecewise fractional derivative by employing the Caputo type distributed-order fractional derivative and ABC fractional derivative.

Unlabelled: As the first outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, the elder population and those with comorbidities were at higher risk of COVID-19 infection. The mortality rate was also higher in this population. Hence, the management and prevention of this novel disease in nursing homes was of utmost importance.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the quality of care for lip and oral cavity cancer globally using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017, focusing on various health indicators like incidence and years lived with disability.
  • The Quality-of-Care Index (QCI) increased from 53.7 in 1990 to 59.6 in 2017, with women showing a greater increase compared to men; however, significant disparities remained between countries and age groups.
  • Despite the overall improvement in care quality, certain regions, especially in Africa, still lagged behind, highlighting the need for better access to effective treatments globally.

From the epidemiological point of view, the lifetime of cough and sneeze droplets in the ambient atmosphere plays a significant role in the transmission rate of Coronavirus. The lifetime of indoor respiratory droplets, per se, is a function of droplet size, ambient temperature, and humidity. In the attempt to explore the effective factors of droplet lifetime, sufficient knowledge of atomic-scale interactions and dynamics of the droplet with themselves, as well as the airflow molecules in the room space, is necessary.

Platelet aggregation inhibitory effect and anticoagulant properties of fractions separated from the venoms of Cerastes persicus fieldi and Echis carinatus were investigated. The partial fractionation was performed on a Sephadex G-100 column. Two fractions separated from Cerastes persicus fieldi showed anti platelet aggregation activity on ADP (200 μM)-induced platelet aggregation (ca 80% inhibition).
