Background: Alveolar osteitis (dry socket) is a complication of dental extractions more often involving mandibular molar teeth. It is associated with severe pain developing 2 to 3 days postoperatively with or without halitosis, a socket that may be partially or totally devoid of a blood clot, and increased postoperative visits. This is an update of the Cochrane Review first published in 2012.

Design: Cross-sectional questionnaire-based study.
Setting: United Kingdom.
Introduction Informed consent is the 'permission or agreement' given by the patient for a proposed action. This paper explores the clinician's role in obtaining informed consent, provides an overview of consent and parental responsibility in the UK, and presents practical adjuncts to aid dental professionals in ascertaining who has parental responsibility to delineate persons capable of providing assent on behalf of an underage patient.Consent and parental responsibility While the principles of consent have largely stayed constant with time, subtleties in parental responsibility legislation exist in different regions of the UK.

Introduction Over the past 10 to 15 years, there has been growing recognition that the traditional spectrum of gender-defined dichotomised roles does not necessarily, or accurately, fit within a certain subsection of the population. A condition associated with gender incongruity that dental practitioners must be aware of is gender dysphoria.Aims Our role as dental and oral healthcare professionals necessitates us to provide safe and effective dental healthcare to all members of the population; as such, it is essential for dental healthcare professionals to undertake appropriate professional development to increase their knowledge of gender dysphoria.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Orthodontic treatment is a common health care intervention; treatment duration can be lengthy (2-3 years on average), and adherence to treatment advice is therefore essential for successful outcomes. It has been reported that up to 43% of patients fail to complete treatment, and there are currently no useful predictors of noncompletion. Given that the National Health Service England annual expenditure on primary-care orthodontic treatment is in excess of £200 million (US $267 million), noncompletion of treatment represents a significant inefficient use of public resources.

While orthodontists principally use this radiograph to assess the developing dentition, aid treatment planning and monitor treatment, several peripheral anatomical sites are evident on this radiograph. We review the literature in relation to osteomas presenting in the craniofacial area along with its management.

Patients presenting with severe hypodontia can be challenging to manage. They often present with significant spaces within the dental arches and the lack of permanent teeth can make anchorage control difficult. This case report demonstrates a novel technique for diastema closure in a 14-year-old with severe hypodontia.

In 2017, 354 orthodontic apps were reported to be available, many of them targeted at patients; however, the awareness and usage of apps among orthodontic patients was unreported.
Aim: The primary aim of this study was to assess patients' current awareness of orthodontic apps.
Introduction The use of apps has increased in recent years, especially in healthcare. Due to apps being largely unregulated, the quality and accuracy of the information provided can be variable.Aim To assess the availability of patient-focused oral hygiene apps and profile the characteristics of the most popular apps on Apple's 'App Store' and, on Android, 'Google Play'.

Given individual differences in the experience of dental anxiety, it is important for the dentist to understand its development, detection and management. This article aims to provide an overview of the main psychological theories to explain the development of dental anxiety (behavioural, psychoanalytical and cognitive), as well as an overview of anxiety detection and management techniques from a psychological perspective.
