Article Synopsis
  • Animals experience varying behavioral demands in their complex environments, shifting between states like sleep, wakefulness, and active exploration.
  • The responsiveness of cortical neurons and the dynamics of neuronal population activity are influenced by these behavioral states, particularly during sensory decision-making tasks.
  • The review focuses on how circuit mechanisms in the sensory cortex adapt based on these states, particularly in relation to whisker-mediated behaviors and suggests a new paradigm for studying the relationship between behavior and neuronal coding efficiency in rodents.

To study the spatiotemporal dynamics of neural activity in a cortical population, we implanted a 10 × 10 microelectrode array in the vibrissal cortex of urethane-anesthetized rats. We recorded spontaneous neuronal activity as well as activity evoked in response to sustained and brief sensory stimulation. To quantify the temporal dynamics of activity, we computed the probability distribution function (PDF) of spiking on one electrode given the observation of a spike on another.
