Background: Patients afflicted with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) frequently manifest acute respiratory failure (ARF), characterized by hypercapnia, hypoxia, malnutrition, muscle weakness, heightened work of breathing (WOB), recurrent acute exacerbations, reliance on mechanical ventilation (MV), and difficulties in the weaning phase. Early implementation of rehabilitation interventions holds promise in mitigating prolonged MV and, consequently, reducing intensive care unit (ICU) morbidity and mortality.

Methodology: A prospective study was undertaken involving COPD type 2 respiratory failure patients receiving MV in an ICU setting.

Background: SGLT-2 inhibitors, prescribed for type 2 diabetes, have a heightened risk of amputation. The FDA issued a warning in May 2017, leading to the inclusion of a cautionary label. Vigilance is essential for patients and healthcare providers to promptly identify and address potential limb complications associated with the use of SGLT-2 inhibitors.

The average life expectancy of the Bangladeshi population has risen over the last decade due to economic growth and improved medical care. Although the increased number of older adults and their health is a significant concern, there is scarce of data regarding that. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze the association between nutritional status and functional ability among selected Bangladeshi geriatric populations living in their homes.

Background: Teachers play a pivotal role in imparting nutritional knowledge to their students. This research aimed to evaluate the nutrition-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of selected Bangladeshi school teachers across the country.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using a multistage sampling method.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding obesity and physical activity (PA) among 429 Bangladeshi individuals, revealing that while over 95% had good knowledge, their attitude and practice levels were low.
  • Factors like age, education, marital status, and BMI influenced KAP scores, with significant differences noted in these variables through various statistical tests.
  • The research concluded that even with high knowledge about obesity, there is a need for targeted education and initiatives to improve attitudes and practices related to physical activity to combat rising obesity rates in Bangladesh.*

Article Synopsis
  • Iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) is a significant health issue in poverty-stricken coastal areas of Bangladesh, exacerbated by factors like low knowledge and poor consumption of iodized salt despite existing programs.
  • A study involving 400 households found that while participants had good knowledge of balanced diets, their positive attitudes and practices regarding iodized salt were low, with education and age influencing knowledge and attitude but not practice.
  • The study concluded that enhancing public education on iodized salt and IDDs is crucial, suggesting that adequate iodized salt use is linked to improved attitudes and practices towards achieving better health outcomes.

Objective: This study aimed to present a new ictal component selection technique, named as recursive ICA-decomposition for ictal component selection (RIDICS), for potential application in epileptogenic zone localization.

Methods: The proposed technique decomposes ictal EEG recursively, eliminates a few unwanted components in every recursive cycle, and finally selects the most significant ictal component. Back-projected EEG, regenerated from that component, was used for source estimation.

Background: Electroencephalography source imaging (ESI) is a promising tool for localizing the cortical sources of both ictal and interictal epileptic activities. Many studies have shown the clinical usefulness of interictal ESI, but very few have investigated the utility of ictal ESI. The aim of this article is to examine the clinical usefulness of ictal ESI for epileptic focus localization in patients with refractory focal epilepsy, especially extratemporal lobe epilepsy.

Acidic organophosphorous extractants were screened for the mutual separation of Mn(II) and Zn(II), in a leach solution of waste Zn-C cell powder. This was done using a 2mol/L H2SO4 solution containing 2g/L glucose. Extraction characteristics of both metal ions in this mixture have been examined as functions of equilibrium pH.

This paper presents a state-of-the-art survey of smartphone (SP)-based solutions for fall detection and prevention. Falls are considered as major health hazards for both the elderly and people with neurodegenerative diseases. To mitigate the adverse consequences of falling, a great deal of research has been conducted, mainly focused on two different approaches, namely, fall detection and fall prevention.

The SLC29A3 gene, encoding hENT3, a member of the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family, has recently been found mutated in Faisalabad histiocytosis, pigmented hypertrichotic dermatosis with insulin-dependent diabetes, familial sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML), and H syndromes. We here report clinical and genetic findings of an Egyptian family with H syndrome. We describe two siblings, a 19-yr old girl and a 15-yr old boy, of consanguineous parents.

Background: Typhoid fever is endemic in Karachi, with an incidence among children ranging from 170 to 450 per 100,000 child-years. Vaccination strategies are important for prevention, and the Vi capsular polysaccharide (ViCPS) vaccine has been shown to be effective in reducing the burden of typhoid fever.

Methods: A cluster randomized trial was conducted in three low socioeconomic urban squatter settlements in Karachi, Pakistan between 2002 and 2007.

To evaluate risk factors for infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus (H5N1) in backyard chickens in Bangladesh, we conducted a matched case-control study. We enrolled 25 case farms (cases March-November 2007) and 75 control farms (June-November 2007). We used a questionnaire to collect farm data, which were analyzed by matched-pair analysis and multivariate conditional logistic regression.

To determine the epidemiology of outbreaks of avian influenza A virus (subtypes H5N1, H9N2) in chickens in Bangladesh, we conducted surveys and examined virus isolates. The outbreak began in backyard chickens. Probable sources of infection included egg trays and vehicles from local live bird markets and larger live bird markets.
