Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria in children hospitalized for urinary tract infections (UTIs) at a hospital in Saudi Arabia from 2018 to 2022.
  • Out of 242 urine samples analyzed, 20.7% of the isolates were found to be ESBL producers, with previous antibiotic usage and recurrent UTIs identified as significant risk factors.
  • The ESBL-producing bacteria showed high resistance rates to ampicillin and third-generation cephalosporins, but were universally sensitive to meropenem, highlighting the need for better antibiotic management in high-risk pediatric cases.

Algal enzymes are essential catalysts in numerous biological reactions and industrial processes owing to their adaptability and potency. The marketing of algal enzymes has recently risen due to various reasons, including the cost-efficient manner of their cultivation in photobioreactors, the eco-friendly production of high biomass contents, sources of novel enzymes that used in many sectors (biofuel and bioremediation applications), sustainability, and more renewability. Oxidoreductases and hydrolytic enzymes are among the important applied algal enzymes in industrial applications, with annually growing demand.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study, conducted between January and June 2023, included 89 out of 160 patients, with 44 of them (49.4%) developing HAIs, categorized based on CDC definitions.
  • * The incidence of specific HAIs was noted as 21/1000 days for bloodstream infections, 10/100 urinary catheter days for urinary infections, and 34/1000 ventilator days for pneumonia, revealing that these rates are lower than those in similar hospitals in developing countries.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to compare the fracture resistance of canine teeth restored with TRINIA Endocrowns using three different preparation depths (2 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm).
  • Thirty extracted maxillary canines were endodontically treated and divided into three groups, each receiving endocrowns bonded using a dual-cure resin cement.
  • Results indicated that endocrowns with 2 mm and 3 mm preparations exhibited significantly higher fracture resistance compared to the 4 mm preparation, with the 2 mm version being mostly reparable after failure.

Background: Nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) is responsible for approximately one-third of heart failure and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Recent data suggested the lack of mortality reduction from adding a defibrillator to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in all patients with NICM. Myocardial fibrosis detected by cardiac magnetic resonance late gadolinium enhancement (CMR-LGE) can help risk stratify patients who would benefit from adding a defibrillator to CRT in this patient population.

Fungi play a significant role in the deterioration of various types of monuments. Therefore, the protection of ancient monuments from fungal attacks is an important goal that must attract the attention of researchers worldwide. A total of 69 fungal isolates were recovered from 22 deteriorated objects compromising paper, textiles, wood, and stone in the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) storeroom, Cairo, Egypt.

Background: Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) considerably burden healthcare systems. This study aimed to identify predictors of developing SAP in acute ischemic stroke patients admitted to the Stroke Unit at Manial Specialized Hospital factors with microbiological causality and impact on 30-day mortality.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study.

Background: European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines recommend measuring natriuretic peptides (BNP or NT-proBNP) in patients with suspected heart failure (HF) as a first-line tool. HF should be ruled-out if concen-trations of NT-proBNP are below 300 ng/L and 125 ng/L for acute HF and chronic HF, respectively.

Methods: Patients with suspected HF referred for transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) were enrolled; NT-pro-BNP concentrations were obtained from medical charts (measurement < 48 hours) or prospectively measured on the day of TTE.

Thermophilic actinomycetes are commonly found in extreme environments and can thrive and adapt to extreme conditions. These organisms exhibit substantial variation and garnered significant interest due to their remarkable enzymatic activities. This study evaluated the potential of Streptomyces griseorubens NBR14 and Nocardiopsis synnemataformans NBRM9 strains to produce thermo-stable amylase via submerged fermentation using wheat and bean straw.

Cancer accounted for 10 million deaths in 2020, nearly one in every six deaths annually. Despite advancements, the contemporary clinical management of human neoplasms faces a number of challenges. Surgical removal of tumor tissues is often not possible technically, while radiation and chemotherapy pose the risk of damaging healthy cells, tissues, and organs, presenting complex clinical challenges.

Purpose: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an integral cytokine for the modulation of both innate and adaptive immunity and is involved in the pathogenesis of various cancers. However, conflicting findings on the relationship between MIF polymorphisms and breast cancer (BC) have been reported in earlier research. We investigated the clinical value of serum MIF levels and the association between MIF rs1049829 and rs755622 variants with their serum levels and propensity to develop BC.

Currently, heavy metal-resistant (HMR) marine actinomycetes have attracted much attention worldwide due to their unique capabilities. In this study, 27 marine-derived actinomycetes were isolated from coastal beaches in the Arabian Gulf of Al-Jubail in Saudi Arabia and screened for resistance to 100 mg/L of the heavy metals Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Ni using different assay techniques. Six isolates were selected as HMRs, of which two isolates, JJB5 and JJB11, exhibited the highest maximum tolerance concentrations (200- > 300 mg/L).
