The important role of miRNA in cell proliferation and differentiation has raised interest in exogenous ribonucleases (RNases) as tools to control tumour-associated intracellular and extracellular miRNAs. In this work, we evaluated the effects of the RNase binase from on small non-coding regulatory RNAs in the context of mouse RLS lymphosarcoma inhibition. In vitro binase exhibited cytotoxicity towards RLS cells via apoptosis induction through caspase-3/caspase-7 activation and decreased the levels of miR-21a, let-7g, miR-31 and miR-155.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) has been associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Prolonged excessive alcohol intake contributes to increased production of reactive oxygen species that triggers neuroimmune response and cellular apoptosis and necrosis via lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial, protein or DNA damage. Long term binge alcohol consumption also upregulates glutamate receptors, glucocorticoids and reduces reuptake of glutamate in the central nervous system, resulting in glutamate excitotoxicity, and eventually mitochondrial injury and cell death.

The planned nature of live donor kidney transplantation allows for immunosuppression to be initiated in the pretransplant period. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of pre-emptive immunosuppression on acute rejection rates after live donor kidney transplantation. In two consecutive cohorts of live donor kidneys transplants, 99 patients received pre-emptive immunosuppression with tacrolimus monotherapy for 2 weeks prior to transplantation (PET group - first era) and 100 patients received tacrolimus-based immunosuppression commencing on the day of transplantation (control group - second era).

Background: We compared anaesthetists' ability to identify haemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO) levels using two auditory displays: one based on a standard pulse oximeter display (varying pitch plus alarm) and the other enhanced with additional sound properties (varying pitch plus tremolo and acoustic brightness) to differentiate SpO ranges.

Methods: In a counter-balanced crossover study in a simulator, 20 experienced anaesthetists supervised a junior colleague (an actor) managing two airway surgery scenarios: once while using the enhanced auditory display and once while using a standard auditory display. Participants were distracted with other tasks such as paperwork and workplace interruptions, but were required to identify when SpO transitioned between pre-set ranges (target, low, critical) and when other vital signs transitioned out of a target range.
