Strongylid nematodes represent a major health and performance concern for equids globally. However, the epidemiology of strongylid infections in horse populations remains largely unexplored in Thailand. This study investigated the prevalence of strongylid parasites and the associated risk factors in domesticated horses in Thailand.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the genetic diversity and population structure of a parasitic pathogen affecting freshwater fish, which has been previously under-researched globally.
  • By analyzing specific genetic markers (18S rDNA and ITS genes), the researchers identified 12 distinct haplotypes and found significant genetic variation patterns among populations across different continents.
  • Results indicate an expansion of populations in countries like India, America, and Kenya, highlighting the need for improved management strategies to control this parasite in aquaculture.

Background: Pandemic zoonotic RNA virus infections have continued to threaten humans and animals worldwide. The objective of this review was to highlight the epidemiology and socioeconomic impacts of pandemic zoonotic RNA virus infections that occurred between 1997 and 2021.

Methods: Literature search was done from Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar and Scopus databases, cumulative case fatalities of individual viral infection calculated, and geographic coverage of the pandemics were shown by maps.

Small ruminants and camels are important livestock species in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), although infection can limit their productivity. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of infection and its associated risk factors in small ruminants and camels in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Additionally, seropositive animals were tested for the DNA of .

The indiscriminate use of anthelmintics to control parasitic nematodes in horses has led to the emergence of anthelmintic resistance worldwide. However, there are no data available on using ivermectin for treating strongyle infections within domesticated horses in Thailand. Therefore, this study aimed to use the fecal egg count reduction (FECR) test to determine the strongylid egg reappearance period (ERP).

Background: Mixed strongylid infections significantly impact equine health and performance. Traditional microscopy-based methods exhibit limitations in accurately identifying strongylid species. Nemabiome deep amplicon sequencing approach previously succeeded in describing the strongylid communities in livestock including equids.

Recently, paediatric cardiac computed tomography (CCT) has caused concerns that diagnostic image quality and dose reduction may require further improvement. Consequently, this study aimed to establish institutional (local) diagnostic reference levels (LDRLs) for CCT for paediatric patients, and assess the impact of tube voltage on proposed DRLs in terms of the volume computed tomography index (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP). In addition, effective doses (EDs) of exposure were estimated.

Background: The novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has begun with a wave of misinformation and fear of infection. This may have led people to self-medicate inappropriately. The World Health Organization describes self-medication (SM) as utilizing medicines to relieve symptoms or health conditions without consulting a physician.

Background: Hyponatremia is a prevalent electrolyte abnormality amongst hospitalized patients. The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is a common cause of hyponatremia. Minimal literature described an association between SIADH and brucellosis.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to summarize activities being undertaken by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe to prevent and control COVID-19 in and beyond prisons, activities specifically designed to increase information sharing and to support Member States, to comment on potential impacts of these initiatives at country-level responses and to underline the need for a rights-based approach to managing the pandemic, including the right to vaccination.

Design/methodology/approach: The Health in Prisons Programme (HIPP) of the WHO Regional Office for Europe worked with partner organizations to review regularly the evidence on best practices in prison health and use it to inform policy recommendations at the global level. HIPP issued overarching guidance and specific tools to support implementation of measures to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19 in prisons and other custodial settings.

Background: Anthelmintic resistance is commonly reported in horse populations in developed countries, but evidence in some working horse populations is either lacking or inconclusive.

Objectives: To estimate prevalence of GI nematode infections in working horses in Egypt and to evaluate strongyle resistance to ivermectin, doramectin and fenbendazole.

Study Design: Cross-sectional study.

Background: Equine pythiosis is an emerging, devastating disease that is hard to treat. The tumour-like nodular skin masses grow rapidly and the outcome is generally fatal, and thus early diagnosis and intervention are important.

Objectives: (i) To highlight the clinical, histological and haematological findings in pythiosis, and (ii) to evaluate the efficacy of direct sample multiplex-PCR targeting the single nucleotide polymorphisms within the ribosomal DNA region for detection and genotyping of Pythium insidiosum.

Background: Diagnosis of perioperative myocardial infarction (PMI) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is fraught with complexity since it is primarily based on a single cut-off value for cardiac troponin (cTn) that is exceeded in over 90% of CABG patients, including non-PMI patients. In this study we applied an unsupervised statistical modeling approach to uncover clinically relevant cTn release profiles post-CABG, including PMI, and used this to improve diagnostic accuracy of PMI.

Methods: In 624 patients that underwent CABG, cTnT concentration was serially measured up to 24 h post aortic cross clamping.

Stirred yogurt manufactured using probiotic culture which usually called Rayeb milk in the Middle East region is one of the most important functional fermented milk products. To increase the health and functionality properties to this product, some ingredients like fruits, cereal, and whey protein are used in production. This study was carried out to prepare functional Rayeb milk from goat's milk, barley flour (15%) and honey (4%) mixtures using ABT culture.

Tamr (dried dates) has a high sugar content, essential vitamins, and high nutrient density. Dairy products still are the most typical carriers of probiotic bacteria. Six treatments of bio-rayeb milk were manufactured from goat's milk fortified with 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% Tamr using ABT-5 culture.

Background And Aim Of The Study: Minimally invasive techniques for aortic valve replacement (AVR) have been developed as an alternative to conventional AVR for patients with high operative risk. Yet, these techniques are still associated with an increased risk of postoperative conduction disorders. The study aim was to identify the incidence and fate of postoperative conduction disorders in patients undergoing sutureless (SU) AVR with the Perceval S bioprosthesis.

Background: Post-sternotomy pain in the absence of cardiac ischemia and sternal instability is most commonly due to the sternal wire sutures or a protruding wire. We performed a retrospective study to investigate the effect of removal of the steel wires for relief of post-sternotomy pain.

Methods: All 206 patients who underwent sternal wire removal in our institution from January 2003 through August 2011 were included in this study.

Background And Aim Of The Study: Data relating to the impact of body mass index (BMI) on outcomes after isolated aortic valve replacement (AVR) are scarce and controversial. The study aim was to investigate the predictive value of BMI for early and late mortality after isolated AVR.

Methods: Data obtained from patients who underwent isolated AVR between January 1998 and December 2010 at the authors' institution were analyzed retrospectively.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the short and long-term operative results of patients who underwent a Bentall procedure in a 12-year period. We retrospectively analyzed the data of 170 patients who underwent an elective Bentall procedure between January 1998 and July 2010. All pre- and perioperative variable were entered into a multivariate regression model to identify significant predictors of early and late mortality.

Introduction: Laboratory and clinical data have implicated endotoxin as an important factor in the inflammatory response to cardiopulmonary bypass. We assessed the effects of the administration of bovine intestinal alkaline phosphatase (bIAP), an endotoxin detoxifier, on alkaline phosphatase levels in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.

Methods: A total of 63 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting were enrolled and prospectively randomized.
