Objectives: The metabolic components in neonates may be affected by maternal diabetes mellitus.

Design And Methods: To investigate the alterations in lipid metabolism and the possible atherogenic risk, the lipoprotein a (Lp a), apoproteins, lipid profile, glucose concentrations were measured (ELISA, immunodiffusion and enzymatic) in 77 cord blood samples from diabetic and healthy pregnant mothers.

Results: The body weight, cord glucose and both apoproteins were increased in neonates of gestational and noninsulin dependent diabetic (GDM, NIDDM) than in neonates of nondiabetic mothers (NNDM).

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Mohamed F El-Badrawy"

  • - Mohamed F El-Badrawy's research primarily focuses on the metabolic impact of maternal diabetes on neonates, highlighting significant alterations in lipid metabolism and potential atherogenic risks.
  • - His notable study, published in 2003, examined the lipoprotein (a), apoproteins, and lipid profiles in cord blood from neonates born to mothers with various types of diabetes mellitus compared to those born to non-diabetic mothers.
  • - Findings revealed that neonates from gestational and noninsulin dependent diabetic mothers exhibited increased body weight, higher cord glucose, and elevated levels of apoproteins, indicating potential health concerns related to lipid metabolism in these infants.
