Purpose: Keratoconus is a bilateral asymmetrical degeneration in the cornea. It is associated with local thinning in the cornea leading to visual problems such as myopia and astigmatism. Several treatments, such as lenses and keratoplasty surgeries, were utilized to treat this condition.

Triple Therapy with Telmisartan, Amlodipine, and Rosuvastatin (TAR) Versus Telmisartan/Amlodipine (TA) and Telmisartan/Rosuvastatin (TR) Combinations in Hypertension and Dyslipidemia: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Background: Panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) impacts macular function in eyes with early proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Herein, we used the multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) to objectively investigate this concept.

Methods: In this prospective interventional case series, we enrolled patients with treatment-naive early PDR, absence of clinically significant macular edema, and requirement for PRP.

The grading of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) continues to face challenges due to subjective interpretations, which affect the assessment of its severity. To address this challenge, we are developing an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) system aimed at objectively grading NMIBC. This system uses a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture called the multi-scale pyramidal pretrained CNN to analyze both local and global pathology markers extracted from digital pathology images.

L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria: a report of clinical, radiological, and genetic characteristics of two siblings from Egypt.

L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (L-2-HGA) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by elevated levels of hydroxyglutaric acid in the body fluids and brain with abnormal white matter. We present two siblings with psychomotor retardation and quadriparesis. Their brain imaging showed diffuse bilateral symmetrical involvement of the cerebral cortex, white matter, basal ganglia and cerebellum.

Objectives: To compare the outcomes of bipolar Transurethral Enucleation Resection of the Prostate (TUERP) and simple retropubic prostatectomy in patients with prostate volumes larger than 80 cc.

Patients And Methods: A prospective randomized study included all patients amenable to surgeries for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) with prostate size over 80 cc at a tertiary care hospital between January 2020 to February 2022. Bipolar TUERP and Retropubic open prostatectomy techniques were compared regarding patients' demographics, intraoperative parameters, outcomes, and peri-operative complications.

Association of the serum chemerin level with the development of diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Background: In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR) correlates positively with elevated serum chemerin levels. This study was aimed at investigating the probable association between the serum chemerin level and the development of DR in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included Egyptians and classified them into four groups: group 1, including healthy individuals; group 2, including patients with T1DM without DR; group 3, including patients with T1DM with non-proliferative DR (NPDR); and group 4, including patients with T1DM with proliferative DR (PDR).

Intracranial hemorrhages in infants of diabetic mothers: A national cohort study.

Objective: To assess the association of maternal diabetes mellitus (DM) with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and other intracranial hemorrhages (ICH) in newborns.

Study Design: We analyzed the National Inpatient Sample dataset and compared prevalence of IVH and other subtypes of ICH in infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs) vs. those born to mothers without DM.

Background: To assess the association and outcomes of acute kidney injury (AKI) in infants diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH).

Methods: We analyzed the National Inpatient Sample dataset for the years 2010 through 2018. We evaluated the prevalence and outcomes associated with AKI in infants diagnosed with CDH.

Investigation of a herpesvirus outbreak in mixed breeds of adult domestic ducks using next generation sequencing.

This report characterizes the first lethal outbreak of Marek's disease on a large farm of mixed-breed adult ducks (>18,000) and identifies the pathogen that resulted in high mortality (35%). Clinical signs included inappetence, respiratory distress, depression, muscle weakness, and ataxia. Post mortem revealed enlarged fragile liver mottled with miliary whitish spots and an enlarged spleen.

COVID-19 infection leading to acute pustular dermatoses.

Viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 infection, have been implicated in the development of pustular dermatoses, including generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP). We performed a literature review of existing cases of GPP and AGEP associated with COVID-19 infection and/or treatment reported over a period of 12 months. We summarize the clinical characteristics of these cases and report an additional six new cases of GPP and AGEP.

Most of the freshwaters worldwide are used for agriculture. Freshwater sources are expected to decline and will not suffice to support the food production needed for the growing population. Therefore, growing crops with seawater might constitute a solution.

Bladder cancer (BC) is the 10th most common cancer globally and has a high mortality rate if not detected early and treated promptly. Non-muscle-invasive BC (NMIBC) is a subclassification of BC associated with high rates of recurrence and progression. Current tools for predicting recurrence and progression on NMIBC use scoring systems based on clinical and histopathological markers.

Background: NAFLD and NASH are emerging as primary causes of chronic liver disease, indicating a need for an effective treatment. Mutaflor® probiotic, a microbial treatment of interest, was effective in sustaining remission in ulcerative colitis patients.

Objective: To construct a genetic-epigenetic network linked to HSC signaling as a modulator of NAFLD/NASH pathogenesis, then assess the effects of Mutaflor on this network.

Background: The food and drug administration approved many drugs to treat diabetes mellitus, but those drugs do not have a noticeable effect on weight management. Recently, glucagon-like peptide 1 agonist known as Cotadutide serve as a potent drug in treating type 2 diabetes by reducing blood glucose levels and body weight indices. This study aimed to explore the safety and efficacy of Cotadutide as a treatment for type 2 diabetes individuals.

The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks from a dermatology perspective: A remembrance.

The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, caused a significant loss of life and resulted in injuries, plus other health issues that continue to plague many survivors and responders to this day. With the 20th anniversary of this tragedy approaching, this contribution looks at the dermatologic injuries suffered on the day of the attacks, including burns and lacerations, along with the chronic skin conditions that have afflicted survivors and responders during the nearly two decades since. These chronic illnesses include sarcoidosis, autoimmune disease, ill-defined skin lesions and irritation, nonmelanoma skin cancer, and melanoma.

Echocardiographic assessment of radial right ventricular function in heart transplant recipients.

Aims: Right ventricular (RV) allograft dysfunction is present in half of all heart transplant (HT) recipients. Non-invasive assessment of RV function in the setting of rejection is not well described. We outline an echocardiographic technique, short-axis fractional area change (SAXFAC), to evaluate RV function in the HT population and correlate this with the grade of pathologic rejection.

Determination of Heavy Metals in Groundwater Around Al-Buraihi Sewage Station in Taiz City, Yemen.

Background: In recent years, mitigation of groundwater contamination resulting from the limited availability of freshwater for domestic use has become an important issue. The presence of heavy metals in water could have adverse effects on both plant and animal life.

Objectives: The main objective of the present study was to determine possible heavy metal contamination in groundwater around Al-Buraihi sewage station in Taiz, Yemen and to understand possible sources of contamination and their relationships with groundwater.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae serves as a useful model in experimental biology. Within dermatology research, several studies have examined this organism's role in skin physiology, pathology, and treatment. Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been used to explore the mechanisms of melanogenesis as its extract inhibits key enzymes involved in melanogenesis and melanosome transfer.

A systematic revision of Capparaceae and Cleomaceae in Egypt: an evaluation of the generic delimitations of Capparis and Cleome using ecological and genetic diversity.

Background: The Capparaceae family is commonly recognized as a caper, while Cleomaceae represents one of small flowering family within the order Brassicales. Earlier, Cleomaceae was included in the family Capparaceae; then, it was moved to a distinct family after DNA evidence. Variation in habits and a bewildering array of floral and fruit forms contributed to making Capparaceae a "trash-basket" family in which many unrelated plants were placed.

Celestial effects on the skin.

Many factors affect the health and physiology of human skin, with some of them arising from outer space. This contribution explores four celestial influences on the skin: (1) the sun's ultraviolet light, which has both beneficial and deleterious dermatologic effects, (2) meteorite injuries, (3) possible lunar effects on the body's health, and (4) cosmic radiation as a risk factor for skin cancer and pregnancy-related complications. Some of these extraterrestrial influences on skin health have taken on added significance as human beings increasingly spend more time at higher altitudes in aircraft, spaceships, and space stations.
