Unselected surgical specimens from 118 cancerous breasts of female patients were studied by histochemistry for the presence of cellular estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptors. The receptor tracers used were 17 beta-estradiol-6-carboxymethyl-oxim-bovine serum albumin - fluorescein isothiocyanate and 11 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone-hemisuccinate-bovine serum albumin-tetramethylrodamine isothiocyanate conjugate (Fluoro-CepTM). Out of 118 carcinomas 77 (67%) proved to be positive in the ER and 79 (66%) in the PR test.

The vascular complications arising after the percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of the arteriosclerotic stenosis in the right superficial femoral artery of a 70-year old female patient six days prior to her death were studied by means of light microscopy and with the transmission and scanning electron microscopes. The pictures revealed disruption in the vascular wall of the superficial femoral artery, fresh thrombus in the dissecting aneurysm of arteriosclerotic origin in the distal part of the posterior tibial artery and haemorrhage in the media. A connection is suggested between these findings and the angioplastic intervention.

Ultrastructural features of muscle spindles were studied in biopsy material from 100 patients suffering from classical rheumatoid arthritis. Thickening of the outer capsule, increased amount of extracellular ground substance within the inner capsule, and marked thickening of the basement membrane of capillary blood vessels supplying the muscle spindles were observed. Chronic inflammatory cells and macrophages were present within the spindles.

Muscle changes were studied in biopsy material obtained from 100 patients suffering from classical rheumatoid arthritis. The abnormalities consisted of denervation atrophy of type II muscle fibres, degenerative changes in the sarcoplasm including presence of nemaline rods, and changes within the interstitium: namely perivascular nodular myositis, lymphocytic accumulations, different stages of vasculitis and abnormalities within the intramuscular nerves and muscle spindles. The muscles examined were always severely affected.
