Colloidal suspensions of anisotropic particles are ubiquitous in particle-based industries. Consequently, there is a need to quantify the effects of particle shape on equilibrium phases and kinetic state transitions, particularly at lower aspect ratios (L/D ≈ 1-10). We present a new, colloidal system comprised of hollow, octadecyl-coated silica rods with 40 nm diameter with controlled aspect ratio and thermoreversible short-range attractions.

Automated segmentation of pigmented skin lesions in multispectral imaging.

The aim of this study was to develop an algorithm for the automatic segmentation of multispectral images of pigmented skin lesions. The study involved 1700 patients with 1856 cutaneous pigmented lesions, which were analysed in vivo by a novel spectrophotometric system, before excision. The system is able to acquire a set of 15 different multispectral images at equally spaced wavelengths between 483 and 951 nm.

Narrower surgical margins might be sufficient in invasive horizontal growth phase melanoma.

Background And Aims: The delineation of horizontal and vertical growth phases in primary cutaneous melanoma has contributed to our understanding of melanoma progression. Horizontal growth phase invasive melanomas are now believed to metastasize very rarely. Small melanomas: a clinical study on 270 consecutive cases of cutaneous melanoma.

Effects of short-term pre-operative tamoxifen on steroid receptor and Ki-67 expression in primary breast cancer: an immunocytochemical study.

The effects of the short-term pre-operative administration of tamoxifen (TAM, 20 mg once daily) on the tumor levels of steroid receptors and the nuclear proliferation Ki-67 antigen, were investigated in 32 elderly patients with hormone-sensitive, operable primary breast cancer by means of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). The FNAB smears before (pre-TAM) and after six weeks of treatment (post-TAM) were stained immunocytochemically in order to obtain an H-score for steroid receptors, and the percentage of cellular nuclei containing Ki-67. Effects of topical treatment with fenretinide (4-HPR) and plasma vitamin A levels in patients with actinic keratoses.
