Background: Chlamydiales are familiar causes of acute and chronic infections in humans and animals. Human pulmonary emphysema is a component of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and a condition in which chronic inflammation manifested as bronchiolitis and intra-alveolar accumulation of macrophages is common. It is generally presumed to be of infectious origin.

Chlamiophila pneumoniae were detected in targeted sections of mouse lung tissue by means of transmission electron microscopy and immunofluorescent staining. Incorporation of microorganisms into the axonemal matrix of cilia was observed 24 h after infection. The ciliary axoneme was characterized by pronounced swelling.

Article Synopsis
  • The Krumdieck technique enables the study of precision cut lung slices (PCLS) using a specialized microtome, allowing for long-term observation of tissue changes with fewer animals.
  • Chlamydophila pneumoniae (Cp) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are significant contributors to respiratory issues in young children, making PCLS a potential model for testing these infections.
  • Through various microscopy techniques, researchers found that PCLS maintained good morphology for up to 72 hours post-infection and exhibited characteristic changes associated with Cp and RSV, while still showing detectable ciliary function for up to 96 hours.

We have used the minipig as a prospective animal model for human risk characterization to study primary biochemical alterations upon oral contaminant intake. The effects of three orally administered soils containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) on the expression pattern of the cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP1A1 in various organs have been analyzed. Dependent on the soil sample, subchronic daily oral PAH doses ranged from 0.

The pathogenesis of primary pulmonary hypertension is still unclear. The case of a 68-yr-old female patient who complained of recurrent dizzy spells and collapses over a period of 6 weeks and died of global cardiac failure is presented. Autopsy revealed severe pulmonary hypertension, slight chronic bronchitis, and bronchiolitis as well as intra-alveolar accumulation of macrophages.

In this article we report on a 43-year-old man, who had been treated with two cortisone injections containing soja bean oil for epicondylitis humeri radialis. Four weeks after the second injection necrotized fat which had been extracted surgically was sent to us for histological examination. We could show a calcifying collagen fibre necrosis being cleared by a granulomatous reaction and resorbed by granulation tissue.
