Numerous cancer patients undergoing conventional cancer therapies such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgical tumour removal face relapses several years or even decades later. This may be due to the presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) that survived said therapies. Cancer can develop into a recurrent metastatic disease with latency periods of years to decades. Dormant cancer cells, which represent a major cause of recurrent cancer, are relatively insensitive to most chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation. An assessment of acari (tick and mite) borne diseases was required to support development of risk management strategies in rural areas. To achieve this objective, blood samples were mainly collected from rural residents participating in hunting events. Out of 1,152 blood samples, 93 were positive against acari-borne pathogens from 12 prefectures in Japan.
