Background: GlobalSurg is an international group of researchers whose purpose is to conduct and disseminate robust collaborative, international and multicenter studies.
Objective: To expose the necessary strategies and the barriers crossed in conducting massive multicenter studies in surgery.
Method: During the second semester of 2020, the study Surg-Week Prospective International Cohort Study was carried out.
Introduction: Studies have shown that both perioperative and anesthesia-related cardiac arrest (CA) and mortality rates are much higher in developing countries than in developed countries. This review aimed to compare the rates of perioperative and anesthesia-related CA and mortality during 2 time periods in Brazil.
Methods: A systematic review with meta-analysis of full-text Brazilian observational studies was conducted by searching the Medline, EMBASE, LILACS and SciELO databases up to January 29, 2020.

We conducted a randomized controlled pilot study in infants with critical bronchiolitis ( = 63) comparing high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC, = 35) to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP, = 28). The primary outcome was treatment failure, defined as the need for bilevel positive pressure ventilation or endotracheal intubation. Treatment failure occurred in 10 patients (35.

At particular risk of acquiring malaria is the group of travellers identified as immigrants who return to their home country with the specific intent of visiting friends or relatives (VFRs) and who commonly believe they are immune to malaria and fail to seek pre-travel advice. Our aim was to review the current trends of imported malaria in the three main hospitals of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region (FVG), North Eastern Italy, focusing in particular on patient characteristics and laboratory findings.

This could potentially result in sensory blockade restricted to the sacral dermatomes. We sought to determine the overall incidence of SAF and the role of sacral dermatomes in differentiating between total and partial failures.

We typed a small but informative fragment of the mitochondrial DNA in 23 Sus scrofa samples from a site in north eastern Italy (Biarzo shelter) which provides a continuous record across a ≈6,000 year time frame from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Neolithic. We additionally carried out several radiocarbon dating.

The reestablishment of blood supply may worsen injury through the ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) mechanism. We investigated the effect of dexmedetomidine on the kidneys of rats subjected to an experimental I/R model.

Purpose: To investigate whether allopurinol exerts a protective effect on kidneys by measuring new kidney injury biomarkers (NGALp, NGALu, KIM 1 and IL 18) and analysing the renal function and histology in uninephrectomised rats subjected to ischaemia-reperfusion injury.
Methods: Thirty two Wistar rats were randomly allocated to four groups: Sham (S): laparotomy; Control (C): laparotomy and ischaemia-reperfusion in the left kidney; Control Allopurinol (CA): laparotomy and allopurinol at a dose of 100mg·kg 1·d 1; and Allopurinol (A): laparotomy ischaemia-reperfusion in the left kidney and allopurinol at a dose of 100mg·kg 1·d 1. The NGALp, NGALu, KIM 1, IL 18 and creatinine levels and the kidney histology were analysed.
The practical value of blood cultures in the diagnosis of sepsis is impaired by a delay in the turnaround time to result and by the fact that blood culture positive can be found for only about 30% of these patients. Conventional laboratory signs of sepsis and acute phase protein biomarkers are sensitive and easy to use, but often also very nonspecific. Molecular diagnostic reflects currently the most promising avenue to decrease time to result and to influence decision making for antibiotic therapy in the septic host.

We describe two cases showing that adenoviral infection should be reasonably hypothesized in men with dysuria and scant urethral discharge in addition to meatus inflammation and/or edema (meatitis) or conjunctivitis. Case 1: a 55-year-old man came to our observation in July 2012 referring a 5-day-history of intense dysuria and scant mucoid urethral discharge.

We conducted a surveillance among patients admitted to our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to determine whether the implementation of a specific MRSA antibiotic care bundle (ACB) based on rapid molecular screening for MRSA and de-colonization, reduced the total MRSA infection rate.
Materials And Methods: A total of 431 and 577 nasal swabs were obtained from ICU patients at admission from April 2009 through December 2010 (pre-ACB period) and, after the bundle implementation, from January 2011 through December 2012 (post-ACB period), respectively.

Background: This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in The Cochrane Library, Issue 2, 2008.The technique called one-lung ventilation can confine bleeding or infection to one lung, prevent rupture of a lung cyst or, more commonly, facilitate surgical exposure of the unventilated lung. During one-lung ventilation, anaesthesia is maintained either by delivering an inhalation anaesthetic to the ventilated lung or by infusing an intravenous anaesthetic.

Considering the high prevalence of negative results and the long TAT of the culture test, the use of a rapid and reliable screening method is becoming more and more important, as it reduces the workload, the TAT of negative results, and above all, unnecessary antibiotic prescription.
Methods: The Sysmex UF1000i is a new urine flow cytometry analyzer capable of quantifying urinary particles, including BACT, WBCs, and YLCs.
Purpose: To quantify preoperative serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels in patients undergoing curative resection of colorectal liver metastases and to assess the relationship between NGAL levels and prognostic features in these patients.
Methods: From April 2005 to August 2007, 32 patients operated on for first curative resection of colorectal liver metastases underwent determination of preoperative serum NGAL. Patients were divided into four homogeneous clinical groups and into two risk groups based on their clinical risk scores.
The rapid detection of pathogens in blood is critical for a favorable outcome of patients with suspected sepsis. Although blood culture (BC) is considered the criterion standard for diagnosis of bloodstream infection, it often takes several days to detect the causative organism. In this study, we compared BC with a commercially available multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay to detect bacteria and fungi in blood samples from 144 patients admitted to the emergency department with suspected sepsis.

However, in the context of a donation from a brain dead donor, as in western countries (Spain), it is very high, and there are still controversial aspects that should be continuously assessed in order to ensure good results. Live donations are currently stable and represent about 5% of the total liver transplants performed in Europe.

Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative data, including primary tumor and CLM pathology results, were retrospectively reviewed.
Biomarkers are used ubiquitously as indicators of biological health. The development of genomic and proteomic multiplex technologies have enormously amplified biomarker discovery and application to diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in clinical practice. New technologies are now available that simultaneously identify a wide spectrum of biomarkers and save time and costs.

This framework favours actions involving many sectors and institutions responsible for promoting well-being in the 'community and environment of life and work', in which preventive and educational programmes must also be collocated. This implies a widened and redefined vision of health, involving individual and collective responsibility within a social context.
