In this study, we investigated the biocontrol activity of the P. mediterranea strain PVCT 3C against Mal secco, a severe disease of citrus caused by the vascular fungus Plenodomus tracheiphilus. In vitro, bacterial diffusible compounds, volatile organic compounds and culture filtrates produced by PVCT 3C reduced the mycelial growth and conidial germination of P.

This work investigates micro-electro discharge machining (EDM) performance involving deionized and tap water. The chosen machining regime was semi-finishing, where open voltage (from 100 to 130 V) and current values (5-10 A) were applied using a 0.5 µs pulse-on time and a frequency of 150 kHz, i.

In articular joint implants, polymeric inserts are usually exploited for on-contact sliding surfaces to guarantee low friction and wear, a high load-bearing capacity, impact strength and stiffness, and biocompatibility. Surface micro-structuring can drastically reduce friction and wear by promoting hydrostatic friction due to synovial fluid. Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a suitable material for these applications due to its strong chemical resistance, excellent resistance to stress, cracking, abrasion, and wear, and self-lubricating property.

Clinical/methodical Issue: In the last 20 years, the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms has essentially evolved from surgical to minimally invasive endovascular treatment.

Achievements: There are still a number of clinical situations that make surgical intervention useful or even necessary. This underlines the importance of interdisciplinary vascular centers for the treatment of complex aortic pathologies and their sequelae.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Italian food supply chain responded to the needs of consumers by giving continuity to the supply of food products even if the Italian food system in the first phase of lockdown had to deal with the anxiety of consumers who rushed to the food stores to "clear the shelves". The aim of this research is to provide a qualitative interpretation of Italian families' food consumption experiences during the lockdown due to Covid-19, which lasted from March 9, 2020 to May 4, 2020. This research has examined twenty Italian families and reveals that anxiety about the exhaustion of food stocks was detected in the first weeks of the lockdown, where there were consumers queuing at supermarkets and emptying the shelves (especially of products with high shelf life such as pasta, flour, tomato sauce).

At the present time, there is a growing interest in additive manufacturing (AM) technologies and their integration into current process chains. In particular, the implementation of AM for tool production in micro injection molding (µ-IM), a well-established process, could introduce many advantages. First of all, AM could avoid the need for the time-consuming and expensive fabrication of molds for small series of customized products.

Micro Electrical Discharge Machining (micro-EDM) is a thermo-electric and contactless process most suited for micro-manufacturing and high-precision machining, especially when difficult-to-cut materials, such as super alloys, composites, and electro conductive ceramics, are processed [...

In this paper, the effect of the micro-electro discharge machining (EDM) milling machinability of SiN-TiN workpieces was investigated. The material removal rate (MRR) and tool wear rate (TWR) were analyzed in relation to discharge pulse types in order to evaluate how the different pulse shapes impact on such micro-EDM performance indicators. Voltage and current pulse waveforms were acquired during micro-EDM trials, scheduled according to a Design of Experiment (DOE); then, a pulse discrimination algorithm was used to post-process the data off-line and discriminate the pulse types as short, arc, delayed, or normal.

Microinjection moulding combined with the use of removable inserts is one of the most promising manufacturing processes for microfluidic devices, such as lab-on-chip, that have the potential to revolutionize the healthcare and diagnosis systems. In this work, we have designed, fabricated and tested a compact and disposable plastic optical stretcher. To produce the mould inserts, two micro manufacturing technologies have been used.

This retrospective study evaluated implant survival rate (SR) and marginal bone loss around dental implants placed with ultrasonic implant site preparation. A total of 156 implants were placed in 28 totally and partially edentulous patients. Bone loss was measured on intraoral paralleling digital radiographs taken at the impression phase and after 4 years of loading.

Background: Shorter telomere length (TL) has been reported to be associated with increased risk of early death in elder individuals. Telomere shortening has been also related to chromosomal instability, which may possibly contribute to the development of several types of digestive or urogenital system cancers and smoking-related tumors. Therefore, we investigated the impact of TL on bladder cancer survival.

Recent epidemiological investigations have reported on the association between telomere length (TL) and a number of malignancies, including B-cell lymphoma (BCL). The reported results for BCLs are however inconsistent. We carried out a nested case-control study to determine whether TL is associated with future risk of BCL.

Background And Aims: Several epidemiological studies highlighted the association between folate and B-vitamins low intake and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) risk. Contrasting results were reported on the relationship between folate intake and DNA-methylation. Folate and B-vitamins may modulate DNA-methylation of specific enzymes which are included in the One-Carbon Metabolism (OCM) and in the homocysteine (Hcy) pathways.

This research investigates the effects of household chemicals on human tissues. Five different human tissues (bone, tooth, hair, fingernails, and skin/muscle/fat) were immersed into six different corrosive agents. These agents consisted of hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, lye, bleach, organic septic cleaner, and Coca-Cola(®) soda.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the ability of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) to improve root coverage with a coronally advanced flap (CAF) during a 2-year follow-up.

Methods: Fifteen patients each with two single and similar bilateral Miller Class I or II gingival recessions (30 recessions) were selected. Each recession was randomly assigned to the test group (CAF+EMD) or the control group (CAF only).

The Sn silicate zeolite, Sn-beta, has been shown to be an efficient, selective heterogeneous catalyst for Baeyer-Villiger oxidations. Using primarily a multishell fit to extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) data, we show that the Sn does not randomly insert into the beta-zeolite structure but rather occupies identical, specific, crystallographic sites. These sites are the T5/T6 sites in the six-membered rings.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate early healing results of the palatal wound by comparing three different surgical procedures for harvesting a connective tissue graft: the single-incision (SI), the free gingival graft (FGG) and the trap-door (TD) techniques.

Material And Methods: 36 patients requiring a root coverage procedure were selected for treatment using a bilaminar technique and randomly assigned (12 per group) to the FGG, TD or SI groups. The size of the graft was standardised to 12 x 8 mm and the thickness ranged from 1 to 1.

Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping is playing an increasing role in genome mapping, pharmacogenetic studies, and drug discovery. To date, genome-wide scans and studies involving thousands of SNPs and samples have been hampered by the lack of a system that can perform genotyping with cost-effective throughput, accuracy, and reliability. To address this need, Orrhid has developed an automated, ultra-high throughput system, SNPstream UHT, which uses multiplexed PCR in conjunction with our next generation SNP-IT tag array single base extension genotyping technology The system employs oligonucleotide microarrays manufactured in a 384-well format on a novel glass-bottomed plate.

Background: The coronally advanced flap (CAF) is a predictable method for achieving root coverage in buccal gingival recessions. The use of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) has already been tested in treating intrabony defects. No clinical comparative study has been published evaluating the CAF in combination with EMD in treating buccal gingival recessions.
