The methionine/valine polymorphism at position 129 in the prion protein gene, PRNP M129V, is a known risk factor for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Psychiatric manifestations including psychosis are common in the early phase of CJD and it has therefore been hypothesized that the prion protein could be involved in psychotic disorders.
